In my opinion, I suspect part #57 was left out. I suspect the water you are seeing coming up the shift shaft is splashing from the major turbulence under the pan.

You can prove my theory by taping up around the shift shaft to prevent water from entering from the bottom of the pan. Since you are going to do this at the dock, you can tape it up real well since you dont need to shift into gear and will remove it afterwards. That will prove if it is splashing up or coming from the adaptor plate gasket failed.
