There weren't any "special" resins back then that I know of but many tanks were built that have held up. Unfortunately many have also had issues. The majority that have had problems were attributed to additives in the fuel that weren't in it before and soften the interior coating, sometimes dissolving it. The newer resins are mainly formulated to be alcohol resistant in anticipation of ethanol being added at some point to diesel.
