I just got back from the lower keys last week and had the same problem mostly because of small mahi. Switched to all bead rigs and did much better. Also, it's easy to turn the hooks inward when fishing very weedy areas. Makes them almost weedless. I've been using bead rigs since I was a teenager many mango seasons ago and never had one break. Mostly for weeds and for toothy critters like kings and cudas.

Got 5 nice mahi after switching to bead rigs the first day, 10 the second and 15 or so the 3rd trip. Third day out, which I missed, was mostly smaller mahi out about 25 miles and little to no weeds compared to earlier trips.
