A little off topic, but maybe helpful to somebody. We leave one freezer going in the house we're not occupying, they're both seasonal now, so we're talking 6 months at a time. Just before we're leaving I freeze a plastic cup of water, and a quarter next to it, once frozen I put the quarter on the top of the ice. If it's still sitting on the top of the ice when return, we know the freezer never stopped long enough to do any damage. If it isn't on top, well the power was out for a long time...
I just put a couple ice cubes in a zip lock bag. If they are still cubes, I know the freezer has not lost it's cool. If I find a frozen puddle in the bag, I know there's been a problem. I asked the wife one time if the sentinel cubes were still OK. She said WTF are sentinel cubes. I explained.
