Is this tank built in to the point that you can't remove it? If not I would take it out, rinse it out well and inspect it. If it looks OK, put it back in and use it.If it is built in and you can still get the pick up and sending unit out you should be able to get most of the crud out through the hole. Just don't try using the shop vac, it might turn into a jet engine.. An old welder trick is to use ammonia and hot water to steam the tank out.
