The strain issue is the key. The constant action of engines, propulsion systems, and hull pounding create non-stop vibration and strain.

Stranded wire is more flexible than solid wire, therefore it can take more strain and vibration. Soldering converts stranded wire to solid wire.

Good thing you are bad at soldering.
