Agreed on this. Big fan of historical fiction. Whenever I don't know what I want, I read one of his stories.

Also, believe it or not newt Gingrich (yeah that newt Gingrich) has written some Great War books. Pens them as novels but they're based on real battles and real people. I went through a phase where I read a ton of nonfiction and fiction about the revolutionary and civil war and his read better than most. "Grant", mentioned earlier, a bit drier, but another book worth reading.
