Just wondering if there is much activity on the West side of Vancouver Island yet. Was up around Active Pass near Pender a few weekends ago and did not see much fishing. Any input would be appreciated.
not yet its a bit early, fished porler on sunday and lost 1 fish..were only out for an hour..sooke is doing ok..halibut r supposably doing great on the west coast...i was fishing 95' on the rigger and in 160' of water at porlier with a lime twist coyote
Thinking about going to Comox on the Eastside over Memorial weekend. West side sounds like the bite has not started yet, very spotty is the best I have heard. I feel like if we don't go someplace over the long weekend I am going to hear the reports and it will be great. Where have you heard the best reports from? I know they are moving down it is just a matter of when and how far North I am willing to go with the time given.
Just got back from the north end of the island, lots of halibut, no ones' fishing salmon, but that didn't stop us. We hit our usually places averaged 1 spring a day range was from 20 to 30... Guys in Hardy are predicting a very good year for springs.... Be ready for sticker shock at the pump though.....
My Dad's back started acting up beginning of last week and we had to postpone our trip. I was bummed but waiting until the 11th to leave should give the fish a little more time to get further south. I think we are going to go to Bamfield and run out into the ocean. Watching the reports in hopes of some increased activity over the next 10 days. Fuel prices are...well...high. Do you normally head that far north. We are to big to trailer that far, which is to bad. If fuel prices come down a bit I would like to run up there. Nootka is for sure in August.
If you tow in WA. I would think the only issue is ferries. If you take the first or last one they tend not to be crowded and I've seen excavators wider than 10.5ft on the BC Ferries. I would also travel after dark when the roads don't have much traffic, check the BC rules for overwidth vehicles... The roads to hardy are good with freeway to Campbell river, I've towed a boat up there many times.
I've been going that far north for over 20 years, I've fished the west side from Barkley Sound to Winter Harbor. The north end of the island has better water conditions, the scenery is much better, not as crowded and the fish are larger, the last few years we have got at least 1 over 50. Also in August northern cohos are there with a 4 fish limit...
You can stay in Hardy if you like but we tend to anchor out for 3 or 4 nights so its good to have a shower, galley, freezer, and comfortable sleeping quarters on the boat. There are several great anchorages up there that make the trip even better.
I agree with you finadict, why can't you tow to Hardy? The only drawback is that, when you run up the trip starts when you take off and ends when you get back. when you tow it starts when you hit the water and ends when you get out.
My old man has trailered his 25 Pursuit to hardy over 10 times and said there is no way he would ever tow our new boat up there. We are 10'6" wide and weigh 15k on the trailer. So if he does not feel spunky about the tow I am not going to push it. Trailer to Bellingham and run from there. Anyhow we will most likely go Westside of the island majority of the time. Anyone hear any fishing reports lately. We are planning another trip for 3-4 days for next Thursday after work and can't decide where is the best. Laporuse Bank sounds the best so far.
Just got back and the fishing outside is not that great just yet. Picked up 2 coho 4 Hali and 1 King outside at Lapouruse. Stopped at Sooke on the way home and landed 3 Kings in the with the two biggest being 20 and 26 respectively. Should have just saved the fuel and spent the whole trip at Sooke. We only were fishing there for like 5 hours total. Not going back to Barkley until the fishing gets much much better. I will either go inside or to Sooke / Renfre. Hey maybe someday even Washington if it ever opens...Just wanted to share in case anyone else was planning a trip soon.
I'm on Georgia Strait side on the Sunshine Coast and the fishing here stinks. You have to spend days on the water just to get a single fish, and then you're lucky if you get one over 15lbs.
When you go outside the island, what water conditions do you usually encounter? I'm in a 32' bayliner so I think I could handle it, but I always worry a little about being on the open ocean. thx
Just got home from golfing and am pondering where to go fishing for the holiday weekend right now. We had better fishing at Sooke than we did at Lapouruse Bank? Go figure. Anyhow I am going to go to the web now and try to find some fishing reports.
I'm looking for some fishing budies for Aug. I will be their from aug 12 to Aug 25 if yu can make it part of the time great or all of the time, that will be fine. I will be fishing the Thasis area on the west coast of Vancouver island. You can drive, or fly, directly into the resort.
My boat is a 26' Cat, Glacier Bay, I have all the equipment, and have fished there 2 times befor.
SORRY, BUT NON SMOKERS ONLY, BAD ALLERGIES.
