Default Alaska Halibut/ King Salmon fishing Trips

I am looking into going to Alaska to do some fishing. I have been looking at different packages and guides and I am over welmed at the number of different guides. Can someone tell me difference in the fishing in Holmer, Seward and Soldonta. Does anyone have any experience planning a trip like this or could recommend a fishing guide? any help would be appreciated.

Hey I posted this in another post here on the West Coast Forum but hey who care if you enjoy and get the info;

Just was in Anchorage in June on the 22nd until the 2nd of July We had a gas!! thats an understatement. http://community.webshots.com/album/393443707aKadhA check it out. We went on a planned 10 day trip because we never been there and did not know the differances but.

Here goes;

Fly to Anchorage
From Anchorage you can go to Kenai Peninsula to Homer (fishing City) and set charter
or to Seward, Ak and that is another fishing city get a charter.
or do a fly into Sitka, Ak http://www.reelaffair.com/
Dan is a nice guy http://www.dansalaskafishing.com/pricing.html
Do the Seward run in the Cook inlet or Prince William Sound http://www.greatalaska.com/gaf/pics.html
Soldotna, Ak is 40 minutes north of Anchorage on HWY 1 http://www.alaskawaterways.com/fishing.html fun stuff for sure.

We went with the Son Neil from Marlows too http://www.marlowsonthekenai.com/ nice guy

You will have a blast. DO NOT USE A LOCAL SHIPPER!!!!!! for your fish. Buy Styrofoam coolers at the store put you frozen catch on dry ice or ice packs and seal it and UPS or FED X over night. I found out that the $900.00 we spent to ship our fish back was only around $375.00 on my own UPS or FED X Number but you learn the first time and you make the mistake only 1 Time!! Do NOT BUY more than 1 King salmon tag for 1 day and do it day to day instead of multi king tags. They will bite you if you buy more than 1 at a time. Do not get talked into a FLY OUT to catch SOCKEYE (they call them REDS) Boring trip in a Jon boat. Better off buying a bear watching trip because they are in the fishing holes we were in and we got to catch a couple of Reds but watched the bears most of the day. There are other areas of Alaska to go and fish but this Kenai Peninsula has the densest amount of guides and places to be taken. Cook Inlet or Prince William Sound.

Good luck,

jsnow,
Early June is a good time for halibut in the Cook Inlet. Are you primarily out for a barn door? Are you going to have time for more than one trip? Seward, Homer and Ninilchick all fish different.

Jeff, It depends somewhat on when you are coming. Homer can't be beat for halibut but I move my boat over to Seward in August as it might well be the best Silver (Coho) salmon fishing in the world. The limit is 6 per day and you usually don't have any trouble getting your limit if you go on a charter - I recommend Crackerjack charters in Seward but I'm not as familiar with the charters out of Homer. You can also catch halibut out of Seward but its not quite as good as Homer. Saldotna will be mainly fresh water fishing for King salmon. You will need to check your dates for that fishery. When the kings are running it gets really crowded there and I go somewhere else.

The best fishing is in S.E. Alaska. Not much need to go all that way north, unless your looking to do more tourist stuff, then it makes some sense.
