Default Sea of Cortez

Hi, On my way down to San Carlos, Sonora. Boats already in the water, to late to change plans. The weather does not look like it is going stay in out favor.

So I have this great idea of going for Humbolt Squid at night, when the wind is at a minimum. Then on the way back though some lines for YT.

Any helpful tips would be appreciated. I've already got my Glow Jigs.

Thanks
Chuck

The squid will tear up standard size glows, so the locals make up their larger ones.

The big ones will also break 50 lb class rods, so hand line and rope are recommended. But the big squid are not very good bait.

If you want to catch yellowtail at the island, small live mullet or sardines slow trolled deep on the northwest side, or bottom fished on dropper rigs while anchored at the south end is the trick that now one seems to understand there, year after year.

No one uses much live bait in SC, but this will be the key for you to catch a lot of fish, especially marlin where you toss a live one to one you have teased with your plugs.

If you like to jig, look up a guy and boat there called the Greek, and do what he says

Arrange to buy live sardines from the pangas at the little bridge just before you get to Marine Mart. The owner of these boats brings them to his 4 pangas that load and unload their fish there, and he nets them in the bay at Guaymas. These guys catch 90% of the yt there, almost everyday.

Get someone to give you the coordinates to Tortuga Island and to the sunken volcano. These are the hotspots on nice days, and your boat has the speed and range to do this trip easily.

Have I mentioned Queens Point on the NW side of Tiburon Island out of Kino bay???

Something else to consider is you can fish for Yellow Tail off the giant kelp paddies. While out trolling for albacore and yellow fin look for some of the giant paddies and then free line as large bait as possible. Tail hook em and they will go deep to the YT under the giant leave of the kelp. Let them take it they will play a bit and your on and Fun Ride from there great stuff

Steve,
The fellow is fishing inside the Sea of Cortez close to Guaymas, Sonora, not on the Pacific. No kelp in SC.

Hi Guys,

I just got back last night. Had a great trip. Well the weather wasn't perfect, a little windy
We did get out to do some fishing. Bullshipper, you're right on. The live bait was the winner. Northwest side was hot, a little rough but hot. We used a wire line and a Blue Supershad. On the downrigger we had a multi colored Supershad.Lucky to landed 3 YT a day. We heard on the radio of others getting Humbolts on there jigs. The live Baiters were doing much better, but we got more then enough YT for us and the family. I don't really like that fish. We are going to fillet and cook these alittle different.

Cut the red blood stripe out of the fillet. Makes a big taste difference.

Yellowtail makes excellent Chevice tostados.

Accually sounds fun for a time of the year when there is no fishies to really catch here much.
