we are going to sitka in mid june. mainly to sight see. then on to denali, etc. would like to do some fishing in sitka but the budget is stretched. are there party boats up there? can you reasonably expect to catch fish from a rented skiff? i thought about trying a fill out a private party but i know this is hit or miss. any recommendations? Thanks.
Dude, it's a once in a life time trip. whip out the credit card.

ps I have a 23' contender in St augustine, fl. (and 40 yrs offshore exp) if any Sitkan would like to take me fishing I'll return the favor. Thanks and looking forward to visiting your beautiful state for the first time.
Sitka is loaded with small charters . . . 3-4 people, google it. June is when you want to be there for the Chinook salmon and it's a great little town.
You are hitting it just right for the King salmon run. I cuaght my biggest lifetime King ( 54 #s ) out of Sitka in June. I do not believe there are any party boats and you cannot fish it from a rented skiff. I'll see if I can find a link to guy I used to go with when I traveled that area for business and would stay and fish. He was a nice kid and priced below the rest of the charter fleet.
Great town, wonderful sightseeing and the best fishing is SE Alaska. Like Welder says, you might want to splurge on a charter.
I went out on just a day trip with a guide in Sitka and it was great. I took home more money in fish than the trip cost me. My wife is from there so we went up to visit and I just fished for one day. We limited on everything.
Siv, Tim says he's no longer in the business. but thanks anyway for the tip. I'll probably just wait til I get there and try to fill out a charter. after searching the web I think there's more charter boats there than most large coastal towns in fl. out of curiousity what makes the fishing so expensive up there?
Too bad he has quit the business, but I suspect it not very easy to make a full time living taking folks out fishing.
I guess the price reflects one of the laws of basic economics - Charge what the market will bear. With the growth in the cruise ship traffic I think they are quite busy in season. Keep in mind also thet the season is only about 90 days a year ( not 365 like in Florida ) and that everything needs to be barged into that place. Gas is probably 3.50 a gallon and food is much higher than what you see at home.
Thanks, it will be a great trip regardless of the fishing, we've got some fun stuff planned and perhaps i'll be able to fill out a charter. if not plently of fresh seafood in the markets i'm sure. i had to cut a day out of the sitka time due to the ferry scehdule unfortunately anyway.
...do some charter brokering for non-cruiseship tourists who are not hooked up with a fishing lodge. I plan on running a whale watching boat for them this summer on a part-time basis. I suck at fishing, or I'd offer to take you myself assuming I'm in town.
thanks BW, after looking at the cost of bringin the darn fish back (to fl) i've decided to invest in other actiivities and just eat plenty while i'm there. plus sitka is just our first stop we'll be in homer and seward also. i plan to check with airlline and see if i can check a cooler as baggage instead of shipping fedex. if so on my last day i'll go to seafood market or dock. (if i can find dry ice).
