Mammoth Lakes fishing - The Hull Truth

Heading up to Mammoth Lakes for the first time this weekend for a little camping, hiking, and ALOT of fishing. Planning on hitting up a few local shops when I get there for some info., but was hoping I could get some on THT before having to do that.

Gonna be using spinning rods mostly, but probably will rent a fly rod for a day, maybe two.

Any and all advice would be much appreciated. I've been reading a bit about various spots where they only allow single, barb-less hooks? Does this mean I am screwed with my spinning rods as far as throwing rooster tails goes???

Hi TroutSlayer,
There's a great store called Troutfitter. As you come into Mammoth on Hwy 203 (Main St), pull into the gas station on the left at the corner of Old Mammoth Rd, the Troutfitter is to the left of the gas stn in the strip mall. They can direct you and give great suggestions.

For fishing, head to the Mammoth Lakes Basin. Lake Mamie is great. If you want some hike-in lakes, there are several that can be reached in 20 minutes or less. Also, nearby Convict Lake is having a Trout fishing derby this weekend.

O2BinMammoth, thanks alot for the reply, I love your website, can't wait to do a couple of the "4 easy day hikes".

Could you recommend a few of the best places to camp as far as being close to good fishing goes? would like to fish creeks/streams mostly, not the lakes.

Yikes... no reservation?! When did you say you're going? Hopefully not this weekend ...

Regardless, you might try to make a campsite reservation, I think sometimes they take them a few days in advance. The campgrounds always seem full in the summers...

If you must be near a creek, Sherwin Creek Campground is nice, obviously right on Sherwin Creek. There are aspens all over the creek, I hear they are starting to change colors right now. Should be pretty. Also try Coldwater Creek campground in the Mammoth Lakes Basin area - there are lots of other campgrounds there as well. , just
