I did not go to Catalina this weekend due to fear of the Santa Anna winds. Now I'm looking at a 80 degree weather and a glassy ocean and wondering if I made a mistake. I know there can be breakers in Avalon harbor, but I have also been out there in mild Santa Anna conditions when it was wonderful.

Any way to tell when a Santa Anna is going to blow it out off shore and when it is just going to blow in the mountains?

there are many sites online that give wave height and wind speed along with predictions. One is surfzone and another is http://www.buoyweather.com. I call ahead to the harbor master to get there input along with reading a great book called "southern california cruising guide including offshore islands". This helps to show you which harbors are ok during windy days. I do know that you want to stay away from the west side of the island during the santa ana's.

It depends on where the high is located - socal is a big place. It can be greasy in SD when it's further north.
