Hi - we just inherited a small boat 18 foot, 1972 Reimell, open bow.

It has a rebuilt 125hrspower motor (I think). It is in great condition and we are fixing it up - Anyway - we still have alot to learn but my main question, is there a minimum length suggested for a trip over to Catalina? - I think 18 is kind of small....what do you think?

I'm thinking that 18 is a little small, do people go in 18 footers? Sure but that don't make it safe.

I base my opinion on the fact it sounds like you are new to boating (not a bad thing) and you have a 1972 boat that you don't know much about. also not so sure that boat was made for the open ocean.

We go offshore in a 21 ft. boat but it is a 04 made for open water and we have gps with chartploter, radar, vhf radio.
with hand held backup, also vessel assist.
Anyway I'll bet once you start using the boat you will have a blast and answer your own question about going to Catalina. Be safe and have fun !!
