It's albacore time in Northern CA, through October most years. My trip Saturday landed only five to 30 lbs (no live bait), the one the week before (with live bait) landed 16 fish. Some salmon being caught (with a good chance of larger runs soon as the fish start heading up the rivers). Occasional opah, dorado and yellowtail, and multiple reports of breezing swordfish that so far no one has hooked up. There's a good chance smaller Bluefin (30 to 70 lbs) will show up in a week or two. We're still taking abalone up north, lobster season opens in two weeks, and the pig hunting was outstanding last night.
I had three OK to excellent opportunities in two hours hunting time, saw bunches more (15 or so pigs in several groups) after I took my shot. I took one small boar, all I wanted.
October is by far the best month in Northern CA. Ocean conditions and general weather is the best we get all year, the crowds have gone home and it early or high season for all kinds of things.
Tom, any oictures to go along with the ^^^above^^^ post.
Lester

Easy shot with my buddy's gun- about 125 yards on a stationary pig. My .308 misfired (!), but the pig heard the click and moved a bit away- I grabbed my friend's Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker 30/06 and waited for him to stop. That's a great gun, if I didn't already have a 30/06 that's what I would have gotten instead of the Browning .308 I usually use.
We actually flushed another pig when we were about 300 yards from the one I eventually took, but it was a moving shot through trees and I decided to let it go. We had already seen the one I eventually took, and it looked like a better shot. Flushed another pig when we were driving, and later at night when it was too late to hunt saw several groups of pigs in the horse corrals. Since these are about $100K quarter horses, we don't shoot in that part of the ranch.
Mad Albacore fishing this weekend- sport boats were plugging their boats about 40 miles off Santa Cruz. Scores of 30 or 40 were out there, we stopped after hooking 15-16 when we ran out of space to ice the fillets. Most fish mid 20's, give or take a bit. 10-20 kt wind, 4-6 waves about 7-9 seconds, so not an easy trip in a 24 foot boat, but well worth it. We hooked up on live bait every time we stopped on a troll fish and were back at the harbor by 1:30. Not a bad week, pig on Wednesday, Albacore Sunday.
