Default Fishing for Salmon on Vancouver Island

I will be up in Canada (Vancouver Island) on July 9,10 and 11 for some salmon fishing. Can anyone tell me about fishing around Campell River or Bamfield? Which is better?

Thanks

if your choice is campbell river or bamfield, fishing is definitely better in bamfield.
bamfield is on the west coast of the island; campbell river is on the east (inside) coast.
there is more variety of fishing (bottom fish, halibut and salmon on the west) where on the east you will be limited to salmon fishing only. generally the fishing is also better on the west.

pros of bamfield : bamfield is more remote and thus prettier and better fishing; can be awesome fishing
cons: poor access (float plane, boat ferry via port alberni, or road access via 1.5 hour gravel logging road which can be dicey and must share with seriously big a** logging trucks ; limited accomodations; more sensitive to weather

campbell river is easier to get to by car and thus faster access and definitely more "civilized". salmon fishing can be pretty good.

if you haven't booked a place to stay in bamfield for those dates, it may be way too late. most places are booked for prime time (end of june to labour day) one year in advance.

you may try my friends at Crown charters for charter and accomodations in bamfield. they run a nice operation and the accomodations are nice and new.

If I were you, I'd be heading for Ucluelet BC for those dates. It's an easy drive from anywhere on the island, is only 20 miles north from Bamfield, and it is likely to be the hottest fishing on the Island for those dates. The big Chinook Salmon are starting to show up and there are still lots of Halibut around.

Ucluelet--"20 miles north of Bamfield" by boat maybe but it's a hell of a drive in a car/truck. Yup the fishing should be hot, ok it is hot right now!

Salmon fishing in Bamfield is good to very good right now. While Campbell River has had a good start to the season Bamfiled is a much better choice in July. You need good equipment and be a knowledgable boater to navigate Bamfield safely and handle open Pacific swells and wind waves.

Headed up Barkley sound for a break from Charters in Sooke at the end of July, should be a good time.
