Random Quote: A boat without a ding or four is not being used
Just returned from running the boat to Roche and back for the weekend. I would run out from Everett if the limits were not so small. At one Hali per person that is only 2 fish if my old man and I make the run. That is some pretty spendy fish right there.
It's getting expensive. I almost didn't go because of fuel costs. We are hauling a 24 foot boat with one truck plus I'm hauling my travel trailer with my pickup. ( The motels there leave a lot to be desired ) We try to load up on bottom dwellers also to make the trip worthwhile. Last year we got our limits every day. But it's time away from work so it's all good.
I fished Hein Bank Saturday for halibut but got skunked..We did pick up a couple keeper Lings on the way in. I have given up on the May Neah Bay fishery due to the weather and have gone to July trip with Canadian tags so we can keep 2. That plus the salmon fishing makes it more worthwhile for my group. Plus the weather is better.
Hope you slam them. I am sure if you can get out to Blue Dot or Swiftsure you will limit easily. In my opinion the Halibut fishery has gotten better over the years but the seasons keep getting shorter..?? I suspect we ( sportsmen ) get the short end of the stick quota -wise
Curious to hear what they are charging for gas at the dock out there..4$??
i was fishing for lings around the elliot bay marina, allen bank, and got two tiny halibut on the north side of blakely rocks with herring. also, let us know what the water is like there. i want to go, but i am afraid to get out to swiftsure.
The fishing was pretty good. Thursday most boats got their limits with one 160lb fish being caught. The average was probably 40 lbs. We picked the wrong spot missed the tide and got blasted out and couldn't reach the bottom. The rock fishing was good though and we got plenty of lings and black rockfish. Saturday we went out about 15 miles and got our halibut. It was very rough. 5' plus swell with 1' to 3' chop on top of that. There were several 20' boats out there. I did hook a really nice Steelhead right out near tatoosh.
Gas was $3.75
The Seattle Times today says the quota has been already reached..3 day season ..with a day or two in June. Amazing. The paper says the particpation was up as well as the size of the fish thus the short season. Did you have any trouble getting space on the docks? Was Ralph cleaning fish? He is a savior when you get a big load of rockfish.
Considering I paid 3.44 locally, 3.75 for gas ain't too bad.
The dock was packed. We were very lucky to get a slip. Ralph had a line down the dock. We watched some of the folks waited for over 90 minutes to get their fish fileted. The cape campground was packed too.
Lorrie the fish counter (WDFW) told us that it would be closing Saturday after they did the Wednesday count. They may open in June but I thought I heard there was some kind of restriction on depth for that opener. Less than 200' or something like that. Worth looking into if you are thinking about going.
I will get Canadian tags and we go up in August for a combo salmon/halibut trip.. Yeah, they have 30 fathom restriction on the second opener..Kind of silly for a 2 day season.
Where do you fish for Halibut? Swiftsure or Blue Dot..
Been to all the spots over the years but we have settles on a couple holes we like at Swiftsure..shorter run the usually sloppy conditions. I would love to see these guys from back East with the center consoles and 2 big outboards running the 30 knots they claim to run in 5-6 footers..You would take a hideous beating in what is everyday conditions at Neah Bay..
Siv I think of the East Coast guys each and every time I am running out of Barkley Sound 26 miles to the Bank. It always seems to be 4 feet at 9 seconds apart at the weather buoy. Nice headsea on the way out. Slowing down to 21-22 mph and thinking 40 or 50mph in this? Then I seen their pics and it is dead calm. I don't see many days like that here in these parts. With that long run from Everett it is nice to be able to cruise 35-38 mph when conditions are right but that is not nearly often enough at Race Rocks.
4' at 9 seconds is actually pretty nice, I am sure you have seen worse.
Here is the report for the nearshore waters today..Again, love to see somebody run 30 mph in this stuff.
TODAY...NW WIND 10 TO 20 KT. WIND WAVES 1 TO 3 FT. W SWELL 7 FT AT 9 SECONDS.
TONIGHT...NW WIND 10 TO 20 KT. WIND WAVES 1 TO 3 FT. W SWELL 6 FT AT 8 SECONDS.
TUE...W WIND 10 KT BECOMING SW IN THE AFTERNOON. WIND WAVES 1 FT. W SWELL 6 FT AT 8 SECONDS.
Don't forget the RAIN!! We got hit by showers that felt like we were being sprayed with a firehose the temperature was only 50 degrees.
The boat we were in is a 24' glastron ( hydrasport )wa and we took a pretty good beating. My buddy (the boat owner) kept trying to get up to 20+ mph but we couldn't take it for long. The nose wouldn't stay down. Coming in near tatoosh it was a washing machine with the wind against tide. Some of the smaller boats were trimmed nose down as much as possible and just getting pounded. There was a guy in a 22' hewescraft hardtop that was doing pretty well in it. He had the suspension seats as well. That searunner may be my next boat.
I am pretty conservative on my wave judgement. That forecast is not pretty. I was referring more to the wind wave than the swell. The swell seems to be constant and not too bad until it gets below 9 seconds and you add the winde wave to it. Which is what it looks like currently. My uncle was going to bring his 3000 Express down from Friday to Elliot Bay and he changed his plans from Monday to Wed. I looks like it will be sloppy then also.
We are taking the first fishing voyage on my new Fishtale 2 this weekend. Port Angeles Derby. Very nervous to get the first blood on the boat. Heading out from Everett on Friday morning and returning Monday.......hopefully with some prize money !
The Fishtale 2 is a 37 Riviera Sportfisher. Just added trolling valves, remote autopilot and 4 Scotties. Moored at the new Everett 12th St Marina. Picked up a 25 pounder in the PA Derby (FIRST BLOOD !!). Going to hit the Tulalip Bubble tomorrow. Heading up to Roche on Thursday to fish off Sydney (Canadian Chinookies) and some San Juan lings.
Love those Riv's classy and they look to be well built quite an upgrade! Congrats.
Our Sidney shrimp trip of a few weeks ago now was SUPER, love it there.
