There isn't a good forum that I can think for information, locations.. A 6 week season keeps interest rather low. I have done well in the San Juans over the years but for sure Neah Bay. Hit any of the rocks and reefs south of Tatoosh and you'll be in them.

Location is everything. You gotta find rocks. Live bait is the ticket either sanddabs (get them on your way to the rocks) or small rockfish work too drift them off the bottom bait hook through the nose and a treble hook stinger in the far back. Use a sliding egg sinker above the bait a couple of feet.
Lead headed Jigs with a scampi split-tail in any color as long as it it white work great tipped with a strip of squid. Use just enough weight (leadhead) to keep you bouncing the bottom.
They usually hit hard and always make a run to the rocks so set-up and reel hard with a tight drag to keep them from rocking you. If you do get rocked try motoring away slowley and sometimes you can pull them out.
Hope some of this helps.

Greggo's got it. Steep rocky formations. The San Juans are fantastic as Siv said. Deception Pass is also great. Foul Weather Bluff is good also. I jig with Purple Label with good results but the live bait is better no doubt.

Good Luck,

Go here 48-15.578N/125-32.198W and use 32 oz. Solvkroken SS jigs and you will get one everytime you hit bottom and some big ones too 35 - 50 pounds all day long.

Man that's a good run out. We fished that area last year (not quite as far out ) and had a ball. There were two guys out there in a little 14' smoker craft with a 15 horse engine chasing butts. Crazy!! We might be heading up there in May if everything pans out.
The problem with fishing near shore on the reefs is that you can't get to the bottom for all the black bass. We got our limit in no time and pulled up our limits of lings and cabazon as well. Epic fishing days.

i do most of my ling fishing on the west coast of van isle.
when specifically targetting ling i prefer to use large baits. Frequently not hooking the big lings but slowly pulling them up as they bite down and hold the bait up to the surface. I prefer to use 1.5 to 2 pound kelp greenling as bait, but do often use artificials like large scampis on bullet head single hook jigs in the 8-16 oz range.
gotta love those dragons!
