I will be in Alaska at the end of June for 3 to 4 days. I debark in Whittier. I want to fish for salmon and maybe Halibit. Should I try Whittier or go to Seward

Neither. That time of year neither Whittier nor Seward will be real hot for salmon and neither is known for its great halibut fishing . Since you only have a few days your best bet would be to fish for salmon on the Kenai River out of Soldotna or Kenai. Kings and reds should both good to excellent then.

For halibut go to Homer. It's pretty much a sure thing. Driving distance from Soldotna to Homer is only 90 miles.

I live in Soldotna and just fish/boat for fun. Therefore I have no vested interest in where you end up going. Just trying to help. Good luck.

Whittier to Soldotna is about 130 - 140 miles of some of the prettiest country you'll ever see. You can probably catch a ride from these folks: http://www.homerstageline.com/. They make the drive daily in the summer. You'd probably have to get a cab ride from "downtown" Whittier, out through the tunnel to the Seward Hwy. and the Homer folks could then pick you up for your ride to Soldotna or Kenai. There are probably bus options that I'm not aware of. You can catch 25 minute flights from Anchorage to Kenai for about $150 round trip. There are probably 10 or 12 flights per day.

I don't know if you can rent a car on Whittier or not. For sure you can in Anchorage which is about an hours drive from Whittier. If it were me I'd rent a car just for the flexibility. There's a lot to see up here.

Let me know if you need anymore help.

I was up in Soldotna this past June myself. What Standup is telling you is the truth. I fished Cook's Inlet for halibut. Nothing to large but big enough. Biggest was 51 pounds. The kings were running when I was there on the Kenia River. Awesome fish to fight on light tackle. I picked up a 38 and 44 pounders. I rented a car from Alamo it was 1/2 the price that Hertz wanted. But you should really think about renting a car. There is so much to see. It was a beautiful ride from Anchorage. It is unbelievable how beautiful it is up there. I really want to make a second booking. Just remember if you are a light sleeper the sun is still up at 2 in the morning.

Southeast alaska ie ketchican area has good king and halibut fishing that time of year. Sounds like you might be cruising the island passage if so perhaps you can schedule a day to fish.

2 points:

1 - You can now rent from Avis in Whittier.
2 - Charters from Whittier that go out to Montague Island can get you some very nice halibut, and the scenery is nice. It might be possible to get a few early silvers in late June if you go way out to Montague.

I will be in Sitka on July 2 with 8 people on a cruise. We would like to fish. Big Blue wants $200 per head for 6 hours. How does the price compare to others in the area

Big Blue is one of the large Charter operators in Sitka and has a very good reputation. They are competitors of my business, but they are decent and the price you are being charged is resonable. Their Captains are well trained and their staff are professional. If you want to check the price against a charter broker, call Angela at Sitka Charters. She is the largest independent charter broker in the Sitka area, and I'm betting she quote you a similar price. You can find her on the internet.

Man alive fishin's expensive up there! What's the limit, 2 fish?

Oh well, I'll be paying the piper too. I'll be in Valdez then and on the Copper River. Can't wait.

By the way, the car rental fees are NUTZ! You could rent a Ferrari in Vegas for what a stripped Chevy Cobalt cost to rent out of Anchorage! Reservations are required, I've seen too often the agencies running out of cars.

It's not really that expensive for what you get. A typical SE charter burns 40ish gallons a fuel a day also. I charter captain out of Prince of Wales and we typically get limits of just about everything for our clients depending on the time of the summer. That includes a king salmon, 6 silver salmon, 2 halibut, lingcod, yelloweye, and a few rockfish. $200 is cheap to go out into the open ocean, have a safe fishing experience in Alaska, fight lots of fish, and fill the freezer.

That IS a bargain. I've also seen $200 days where a single 25# 'but is the only catch. That's some pretty darned expensive fish! I'm saving this message for future reference, I may be calling you!

It looks pretty cold. I am bringing rain gear and hooded sweatshirts. Hope the boats cabin is heated. Do out if state senior citizens (over 65) need a fishing licence?
