Default Looking for an old reliable pickup truck that can tow 7k pounds

Just sold my 2010 Tundra 5.7L w towing package (10k pound rating) (zero problems, loved it) but had to get rid of the the monthly payment, and I was only using it once or twice a month.

Looking for an older / cheap truck to tow my boat. I'm estimating my Grady White Voyager w trailer is somewhere between 7 to 8k pounds.

The older trucks don't seem to tow as much unless I go diesel, which is much more $$. Any ideas?

Is there a clear winner / better / more reliable beast of burden (Ford vs Chevy vs Dodge), just for towing, especially from the mid 90s to early 2000s.

Pretty much any 1500 with over 5 liter engine will tow that boat. A diesel is not needed.

What he said. If your not in a hurry, then most any chevy with a 350, Ford with a 351, or a dodge with a 360 will handle it fine for occasional towing use. I would go with a 4X4 though as the lighter 1/2 ton truck could have some traction issues at the ramp if your ramp gets wet or is slightly steep.

Look at gear ratio in rear end and aim for a gasser with a 4:10 in it. If you can find a V-10 even better. My brother has a 98 Dodge 2500 with V-10 and 4:10 rear that pulls my 7K shamrock no problem. Ford offered a V-10 for a while and it is a beast too.

Any thoughts or specific options / rear end I should look for to help with towing?

You want a tranny cooler which may be on from factory. Also assure the truck has the 4.10 gearing. 3.73 will work but you will be pushing tow limits.

The GM 5.3/5.7 and 4l60e are reliable. If tranny hasn't been flushed then they have been known to need a rebuild around 150k.

is there an easy way of telling if the GMC Yukon has a 4.10 diff.

I doubt a you can find a 4.10 unless you are going to a 2500. I beleive GM lists them on the glove box as pro codes. I believe it breaks out as follows.

GU2 = 2.73 Ratio
GU4 = 3.08 Ratio
GU5 = 3.23 Ratio
GU6 = 3.42 Ratio
GT4 = 3.73 Ratio
GT5 = 4.10 Ratio

In 2000 most all of the 5.3's got 4.10 gears, after 00 though it was a crapshoot. The LS engine trucks got lower gear ratios than the earlier engines as they are a higher revving engine.

GT4 (3.73) Can anyone tell me if 7k pounds is cutting it close? No mountains, no long distances, but at the ramp ... ??

Try and find a 2000-2002 chevy single cab 2500hd with the 6.0 gasser

It's a great motor, pretty trouble free and because they are gas hogs you can probably pick one up pretty cheap right now...they were transition years and not so popular

Find a full size super duty w/ a v10. They tow fantastic but no one wants them because the like fuel. They are generally pretty cheap.

Was able to borrow the Yukon XL yesterday and take my boat to the ramp with it. Excellent suspension, solid pull out at the ramp, and good braking when the usual dipsh*t cuts in front and slows down.

Very happy so far. I don't think I can do much better for $2500. Plan to pick it up tomorrow.

Nice- what fuel economy do you get ? Silly to even ask but curious in case my beloved Explorer ever dies and I need a new ( used ) tow rig.

I've searched and found a range of 16-18 MPG but time will tell.

Looked at the rpo codes, it has the towing package, transmission cooler, auto leveler, locking / posi traction. Very happy so far.
