Default Performance Chip Selection

Hi guys,
My father is now interested in a performance chip to save fuel. Truck is a 2011 F-250 with the 6.7 Powerstroke diesel engine. Most of his driving is in the city with occasional highway. He's not interested in the dramatic power gains, but maybe it might come to use. Towing is not too much of a factor... might take his boat out once a month.

What about other products/brands?

I know they sell another one which is only a gauge display, but he's looking for actual fuel savings as some others have reported on the 22mpg range...

Currently on his digital factory gauge he's mostly doing 16mpg on average.

Any advice is appreciated.

I would look at the Spartan tuner for the Fords, if they have one out for the 6.7. Just remember that he will void all of the warranty on the truck with a tuner. These new ones fall under a different set of rules than the old diesels.

Exactly, the vehicle manufacturers take a dim view of these things, and the newer ECU's will log any modifications or add ons. You might want to discuss it with the dealer before installing one.

If he truly want's to save fuel, then he should remove the DPF system, UREA system and the EGR system. River City Diesel has a kit to do this. I'd also tell him to take a look at the H&S tuners.

I would imagine Ford knows more about "tuning" it's engines that a company selling chips would. It will not increase mileage without affecting something else. Big waste of money in my opinion and can cause engine damage that will not be under warranty.

For the 2011+ PSD the 16 mpg average is about right for his mostly in town driving. The 22 mpg claims are what it can do rolling down the highway not towing at about 65-70 mph in good conditions. These trucks get high teens to low 20's at most highway speeds not towing of course. They get low to mid teens around town pending driving conditions/style. Mine has 7,500 miles now and lifetime average mpg is now at 16.5 on computer in mixed driving.

H&S performance, Spartan and Innovative Diesel are the one's I'd recommend talking with about tuning. Innovative Diesel is using SCT products for tuning and they are doing non delete tuning with around 1000 tq and hp over 400 at ground. The feedback on it is positive so far with mild gains in mpg and less frequent regens too. Again that is with all factory emissions systems in place with the Innovative tunes.

IMO if he's averaging 16 in mostly city driving he won't see a ton more no matter what and that's pretty darn good for a vehicle of this size with this power. I think deleting is starting to get old. These engines run so smooth and strong stock and I'm not usually a stock type person.

I have 13K on mine, Doesn't regen that often. NO sense in chipping it if you care about your warranty. I see 16-18 around town depending how fast i want to get there, i have seen up to 26 on I95 around 68-72, usually anything faster the mpgs drops pretty fast.

If you decide to tune it go with one of these blackdawg mentioned. Edge has never really been "the" tuner for Ford diesels. I love my Spartan and DPF delete but my only experience is with the 6.4, haven't made it to a 6.7 yet to have a truely valid opinion. Mileage improved substantially with my setup and actually gets better with more horsepower. my $.02

My take on it is Ford has to deal with restrictions that prevent them from being able to tune for best economy. If the manufactures were allowed to make the decisions we wouldn't see DPFs and regen and all that stuff.

I don't have any experience with new stuff but my 2001 7.3 ford has 223k and has been running a mild tune (80eco) on a DP tuner since I owned it. I picked up 1mpg so that is not that impressive but it also makes the truck a whole lot more drivable.

Tuners are to make em go faster and quicker. We tell the admiral that we do it to save money on fuel, just like we told em we need the one tonner to tow our dingy, just to be on the safe side.
