Default Tire Wear Dilema

I have a 7000 pound boat on a continental tandem axel trailer. The trailer was serviced about a year ago from the local continental dealer, with all new brakes bearings and seals and master cylinder. I also purchased four new radial D rated tires.

I usually check the air pressure to make sure that everything is ok.

Now I have discovered that the the right rear tire is badly worn only on the inside. I asked the boat service company to check it out since I was having the engines serviced. The boat dealer told me that all they could find was that the tire was a little low on air and that there was water in the bearing hubs so they greased them. They said they measured them and they looked ok.

First question does this sound plausible that all that was wearing one tire on one side is low inflation?

Second question with new bearings and seals should there be water in the bearings? The continental dealer who installed them said they should not need greasing very often.

Water is in the bearings because a seal is blown. Regreasing the hub won't fix the problem. The seals need to be replaced.

If you don't have posi-lube or "sure lube"type hubs, I would make the investment in swapping out for them, because they make re-greasing much easier.

Is the trailer a torsion or leaf spring? Sounds like the tire may be wearing due to a collapsed spring, or something is out of alignment.

I was told by the trailer shop when they installed them they should keep water out. I am going to check with them again.

It has torsion axels.

Default Too Much Grease

I have heard that if you put too much grease these will blow out the seal. Is this correct?

Strangely enough, I had tire issue and bearings for a long time, tried to resolve myself... Replaced leaf springs, axles and tires... Started running 50 psi in all the tires and put a 4 ' level on the front " I " beam and found I wasn't exactly level... Adjusted my ball to be level with the boat attached ... And my issue was resolved... I had all kinda of funky tire wear issues...
My not be your issue but worth looking at..

Add fuel, gear to the boat, then add 1100# trailer weight and you're around 9000 pounds?

Load range D tires are rated for a max capacity of 1725 @ 65psi. That's less than 7000 pounds, total....and that's only if tires are fully inflated.

Suggest that wear might be coming from underinflated, overloaded, tires when you turn the trailer during launch or parking. Whatever the cause of the wear is, sounds like you need load range E tires.

Load range C is 1750. I Just put Kumho 857's on my trailer and they're D rated at 2271. 14" tires BTW.

Actually the 7,000 pounds was with trailer and fuel and gear. I was told by one shop that it was a bent axel but all they did was look at it. They did not check the level the air or even measure anything.

I went back and measured and sure enough the tire that is bad is a little further back. About 1/2" than the other side. Do you guys think this would be enough to cause excessive wear?

That's weird. I went back to the tire site and read more. Seems that there isn't any standard load rating for the ranges; depends on other factors.

I'm correct about as low as 1650, and you're correct about 2271, and I found one for 2550, so I guess it depends on each individual size and brand.

What in the heck do load ranges mean, then?

alignment can easily be checked manually. Rub your hand across the tread from side to side..if the edges are "feathered" it's a toe problem. If you look down the sidewalls of the tires on each side and they aren't parallel, it's a camber problem.

Do you turn your trailer in some tight corners or circles? Dual and triple axle trailers will always have some odd feathering wear patterns, particularly if if do tight corners or turnarounds because some of the tires are getting drug sideways during these manuevers.

Hey Jerry. I'm no expert on trailer axles but I'll bet being 1/2" off on that tire is the problem. I don't know if you remember me but we met last year fishing on Scott's boat. Have you taken it to Automotive One on 17-92? I've had good experiences with them in the past. Jeff

Jeff,

Yes I remember you. How are you doing? I am not familiar with Automotive One. Do they work on trailers?

The place I referred to above is Davids Trailers and I was not impressed. And they are a Continental Dealer. But I just did not see any real evaluation of the problem. Just a guy looking at it and saying axels are bent.

A 1/2" track difference indicates a bent axle/toe problem. If the axle which is 1/2" back is worn on the inside, there's your problem..toe out on that side.

Jerry - Automotive One is on 17-92 just south of 434. Karl runs the trailer shop in the back. They are a quality outfit.
