Default Towing with Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7L V8

Hey guys,

I'm getting ready to buy a 21' CC. I have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited with the 5.7L V8 Hemi. The tow capacity is 7000lbs according to the manufacturer, so I hadn't given it a second thought until I ventured over here and read some horror stories.

Will I be ok towing a "heavy" 21'CC (4500lbs or so fully rigged)? I'll be towing mostly to and from the boat ramp (15 miles or so) but I will also be making a few trips to CT every summer (200 miles or so of highway driving).

Anyone have any experience towing with the V8?

FYI as a follow up - the trailer I get will be a dual axle trailer with surge brakes.

I have been trailering my 21 Seacraft +/- 4,500 lbs with a JGC, 6 cyl, with a 4 x 4, which is good to take it out of steep ramps. Been at it since 2004, trailer has brakes, dual axle. Never an issue, change the trans fluid everyyear, typical tow is 40 miles round trip, about 7-10 times and about 10-12 trips of 200 miles to the Keys. Jeep has 167,000 miles

I tow my boat that weighs about 4500lbs on the trailer with a 2003 JGC no problem. I have the 4.7L V8. You should have no problem if the trailer has brakes.

I have a 23' on an aluminum double axle trailer that weighs approx 5,700 lbs. in typical loading. My current 2008 GC with the 305 hp 4.7 tows it just fine (admittedly haven't taken further than Montauk, which is 85 miles each way - but I took the same rig to Lake George with my 2004 GC with the old 4.7 (235 hp) and it did fine too), so the 330 hp 5.7 Hemi will be good.
As far as power goes, the Hemi has more hp than the engines in both the Chevy Tahoe and Ford Expedition.

I tow my Whaler with my JCG 4.7L V8. You won’t have any problems pulling your CC with a Hemi, but that boat will push your Jeep around a bit if you need to stop in a hurry. Just watch your speed and make sure those brakes are working well and you'll be fine.

Thanks a lot for everyone's responses. You've set my mind at ease. I'll make sure to pay attention to the condition of the brakes on the trailer I end up with.

I"ve towed my boat (a little over 4000) with both my 98 Jeep 4.0 and the 07 Jeep with the 5.7. The 4.0 knows its there, the 5.7 does not notice, 4500 lbs will be no issue, the later model Jeep also have much better brakes. The only thing I'd add if towing a heavy tongue weight trailer on a regular basis is air bags in the rear coils, I have em on my 98 and they work great. The 07 does have a pretty soft suspension compared to a 1500 pick up truck.

And if you have bad ramps, the Quadradrive II (most 5.7 Hemis came with this, you can tell if the rear diff cover has 12 bolts instead of 10)...is excellent, you have front and rear electronic lockers, no one else offers this as far as I know. The on demand transfer case also works great. Best 4x4 out there.....

Thanks Lou. I do have Quadradrive II. And I agree - I've been thrilled with my jeep since I started driving it - I'll never get another 4x4.
