Default Aluminum Bunks...?

I saw a really nice EZ Loader trailer that had aluminum bunks, I haven't seen them before. Are they better then marine grade wood bunks? It appeared there was a strip of rubber or something similar screwed down into the aluminum bunk. What are the benefits to aluminum bunks over wood or are there any benefits? Mike.

I imagine the aluminum would not rot as even marine grade wood can. I have seen some high end custom trailer with the aluminum bunks.

It was probably covered with the plastic bunk slides not rubber. i wouldnt see that it would be any different than wood bunks but if it ever came uncovered it could really do some damage!

Mike,
Did you see it in IRI or OC area, could have been my old trailer. I got it new in 2001 to haul my 23 Reg around and that I did; putting more than 10,000 mile towing it and the alum bunks with rubber/plastic strip worked great, never had to be replaced and no signs of any wear on the gelcoat on the bottom of the boat. Friend of mind purchase the rig last Aug and has towed the rig from IR, DE to the OBX numerous times and really like the trailer too. My current EZ Loader has carpeted wood bunks and if it wasn't for the fact that I'm in a dry stack and not trailering, I would have looked into alum bunks once the carpet wore out.

It's always seemed like a good idea to me. Would be concerned about corrosion resulting from (salt)water being retained between the aluminum bunk and the trailer frame since I don't think there's a gap based on the ones I've seen, but no more a problem than with wood bunks.
Biggest benefit would be over trailers with large wooden bunks that float.

Tony,

I saw an aluminum bunk EZ Loader trailer in Deale MD. It looked really nice, the only thing that would concern me are the fasteners holding down the strip on the bunks. Sounds like its a nonissue though. I'll be looking to upgrade in a couple years. I want to get a couple more years out of my Venture-Vantage roller trailer that is crap even with all the maintenence I do to it. Its really at its max rating under my Contender 23T. It came with the boat and the dealer ordered it in 2004-05....

I was in Vero Beach, FL a while back looking at a used trailer and the local ramp there had lots of Float On trailers with aluminum bunks. It was the first time I'd seen that or at least enough of them in one spot to notice.

How do you like it? I'm assuming having aluminum bunks eliminates the possibility of it floating? I've read some aluminum trailers float due to the wood bunks.

I like the aluminum bunks. Launching and retrieving is a snap and no wood rot to worry about.
