If it were me (and soon to be) I would own a Tundra with the new 4.6.

310 hp; 327 torque and 8300# towing...all while getting up to 20 mpg hwy.

And, if you have AAA, their buying service can get you one for around $21k

I'm averaging 16-17 MPG in my Tundra CrewMax with the 5.7.

I think the Tundra DoubleCab with the 4.6 is a no brainer over a Tacoma Crew Cab. The V6 in the Tacoma will not do better than the new 4.6 V8 for economy and the Tundra is a far superior tow vehicle with more interior room, as well.

We've taken my dad's 20' CC from NJ to the FL Keys with my Tacoma both of the last two years. With four people and the bed/camper shell stuffed full of stuff, power or handling were never a problem. I'd be comfortable taking a bigger/heavier boat with it. The suspension was a problem on the first trip, but there is a free suspension upgrade from your dealer if you know to complain. No suspension problems at all on the second trip.

My Tacoma has a 141" wheelbase and 235hp. That's basically the size/power of the 1/2 tons from the late 90s. The 1/2 tons of today are bigger and will tow better. If you are going to be towing > 5500 lbs or towing tens of thousands of miles every year, get the Tundra. Otherwise buy the truck based on how you'll use it when you're not towing.

I was only a couple hundred lbs over Toyota's payload number. I was WELL below the weight rating that the state of MA assigned to assigned the Tacoma. I was below the weight the state of NJ has assigned to the trailer. North Carolina can't require me to register for the combination weight since neither vehicle is registered in their state. No worries here.

I currently have a 2001 Tundra and it tows real nice. The new Tacoma almost seems to be the same physical size as my 01 Tundra. The new Tundra is much bigger than my 01...but I understand about the whole power size thing......

I really only need equivalent to what I have now......it suits me fine. Just worried that the 6 cyl in the Tacoma will not be enough. Can you order them with an 8 cyl??

I bought a 2wd 2010 tacoma double cab v6 TRD off road In january. Since then with towing the boat, and with a mix of highway and city driving to work (i haven't had it on an extended trip more than 45 miles one way), I have averaged 18.14 mpg. I was towing a 2700# whaler. Now its about a 4500# Scout.

No v8 in the tacoma. Only 4 and 6 cylinder engines.

No. The V6 in the '05+ Tacoma makes almost as much power as the V8 in the '00-'06 Tundra. The Tacoma will have less displacement and an extra gear so you would be shifting more often. Shifting bothers some people and makes no difference to others.

You can order a Toyota designed/approved TRD Supercharger for the Tacoma which will give you 304HP@5400rpm and 334lb-ft@3600rpm. Down side is your wallet will be $4500 lighter and then you have to buy premium gas.

Depends on your needs. I used to have an 05' V6 that I would tow this with. Farthest was about 30 miles round trip to gas up. Best calculations put it at 6,500 lbs. Real world scales put it at 6,740 lbs with less than half a tank of gas. So probably 7,200 lbs full gas. Yeah I know over the limit but at the time I didn't and I was still pretty pleased with how it towed for what it was. And no tranny cooler. So again... it's all what you plan on doing with it.

If anything, this picture just reinforces the fact that the Tacoma is not the right tow vehicle for this boat!

Dont let the angle of the picture fool you. The size difference isn't as bad as it appears.

I had an 02 Tacoma Double Cab 4x4 and loved it but bought a camper and decided I needed a little more to comfortably pull it. I bought an 01 Tundra extra cab 4x4 with the 8 and love it. The trailer I tow is around 4000 dry and empty so figure probably 5k ready to camp. The Tundra does a great job but downshifts quite a bit and really eats fuel. It does whatever I ask of it - great truck. The good news is I just picked up an 07 Tundra Double Cab with the 5.7 so I am guessing I should have no trouble with the camper. Curious to see what it will do with a 31 Contender.

I use an '03 V8 (4.7L) 4WD Limited Tundra extended cab to pull my 240 Outrage. The boat's 4400 dry. Add 613 for the engine. 150 gallons of gas at 6 lbs = 900. Plus gear, ice and water = 400lb. That's 6300 on top of the trailer. I guess my magic tilt weighs close to 2000.

The Tundra pulls the 8500lbs around town, no problem. Towed it to the Keys with very little fuel and no problem. I've got functioning 4 wheel disc brakes. I always turn overdrive off when towing and the shifting is minimal. Interstate speed is around 65mph and fuel mileage is, of course, horrible!
