Default valvoline vs mobil 1

Valvoline 5W 30 Synthetic is $5 a quart at KMart. I have been using Mobil 1 at around $8.30 a quart. That's almost $25 less per oil change on my Sequoia (ok, keep the "who cares you can't stop anyway" jokes down to a mild roar please).

Does anybody think that it really makes THAT much of a difference to pay that much more quality-wise?

Why not conventional oil changed every 4k miles or so? Walmart's house brand is around $1.90/qt in 5qt jugs these days.

Do you want to change it at 10k intervals?
Does it get low mileage and you want to change it only once a year?
Do you go someplace where the temperatures drop below -20 at night?
Do you keep your vehicles past 250k miles?

Mobil 1 is about $33.29 for 6 qts at Costco ($5.54 a qt). I think its about the same at Walmart. I've used it for years and subscribe to the "if it aint broke don't fix it." mentality...

I use Valvoline Synthetic in my Toyota Tundra pickup simply because that is what my independent mechanic sells. Works great for me.

If I have to get an oil change somewhere else, I just use another name brand of full synthetic including Mobil 1. My mechanic has told me that name brand synthetic oils are pretty much comparable. My experience suggests he is correct.

I concur w/ capt matt. I use mobil 1 and been using it for 20+ years now, but would have no problem using another brand full synthetic.

And yes,
I change my oil at 10k intervals.
I do run my vehicles past 250,000 miles.

Yes... I do change at 10k intervals... my last Sequoia went 150,000 without a problem.

This truck is new... so I figure there are at leat 20 or so oil changes in it's future. AT a $20-25 difference, that is alot of baitmasters ...

At least for Ford, the 5w-20 is for friction reduction and therefore fuel economy. Not a "need" in terms of engine design. The bearings and other lubed parts are happier with a wider range of viscosity. Synthetics or synthetic blends are primo. Oh, disclaimer: in northern climes, 5w20 or even 0w if it is really cold is a great choice. For towing, hot climes, or 4 stroke marine applications there is some benefit to having the thicker oil film that say a 10-40w provides. Today's oils are so good, we had taxi fleet engines going 150k mi with 15kmi change interval with the 5w20. Other than lots of "carmelized" oil on all the parts, the wear services were good for another 100k. I am a full synthertic guy except for my beater which gets synthetic blend.

Default Amsoil

Been running Amsoil in everything I own for years now - change it once a year. After over 300,000 miles still going strong!

I run nothing but dino oil. Never a problem, even on a 300,000 mile gas motor with 6000 mile oil changes. Todays new engines run so clean and hot that the oil never really gets contaminated. Maybe in cold climes I'd consider a synthetic. My take is..synthetics are probably superior lubricants, but for typical street use, you'll never notice a difference, except in your wallet. Use the proper weight oil, and don't look back!

Sorry, thought I put that in there. Wallie World(WalMart). As much as I hate to give them any money, they are the closest place to get groceries and stuff like that by quite a bit. So unless I think about it while Im out and about, thats where I go.
