Default Seal sealant?--Trailer wheel bearing service.

Was reading an article in a boating magazine about servicing trailer wheel bearings. There were no great revelations in the article. However, one little side note in the piece mentioned applying "sealant" to the outer edge of the seal before driving it into the hub.

I've been maintaining trailer bearings for some time, but I've never heard of sealing the seal to the hub. Is anyone else doing this? What sealant are you using? Is it only applicable if there is an irregularity in the hub where the seal is seated?

Sounds as if it might serve a purpose if the seal rim is oozing. Not sure you could ever get the surfaces clean enough for good adhesion, though. Not sure what little bits of sealant would do inside a bearing, either ...

I was wondering about that too.

I always put a bit of grease on my finger and wipe around the outside of seal. Never heard of useing a sealant before maybe Easternmarine knows of some secret and will post something.

If you buy Chicago Rawhide seals at NAPA, they come with a green sealant on the o.d.
