Default 2000 GMC 3500 with a 454?

Crew cab 99k miles leather 4x4 aside from the fact it probably gets terrible milage any other negatives to this rig.

That about sums it up. The front ends need pitman and idler arms after roughly 125K miles, and the occasional hub bearing. They are pretty good trucks. You will be buying stock in the oil companies though as the 454 is one fuel thirsty pig.

Thanks Mac!!

I hate to ask, but i did a search and found MPG in the 10 to 16 range. Any real world experience here? I would guess 14 unloaded and 10 towing?

Depending on what and how fast you're towing, you might be a little optimistic on the towing mileage. 14 unloaded is probably about right.

Had one in a Suburban, 14 was at 60-65 with the cruise control on, add in larger tires and push it to 75-80 unloaded, you're looking in th 10 range. Hook 8-10k to the hitch and get ready for 6 MPG, does have a ton of troque and will pull anything, 3.73 rear end helps, which is what I had, but I don't think you can pull the 10k unless you get the 4.10 if I recall correctly according to the manual.

Thats city and highway milage not unloaded and loaded. Your definately looking at 6-7 mpg towing. Other than that they are very near bullet proof. Pitman and idler do tend to need replacing every 100-125k but your looking at less than 80-100 bucks in parts for everything and a couple hours. What kind of money are they asking? And if you decide against it tell me where it is.

Regular oil changes 300,000 + motors, I had a 99 reg cab 4x4. Loaded 7 to 8 MPG, never ran unloaded.

Kinda doubt it with a 454. That's exactly what I get with a '85 GMC 2500, carbed 350, 4wd, 3:73 gears. Of course the newer trucks do a little better than the old carbed models but still, you're pushing a ton of weight and mucho cubic inches.

10 city 16 hgwy is accurate for the vortech big block. My 1999 CC 454 4x4 dually pulled 9-11, 15-17 depending on how I behaved. Towing will definately drop your milage, ALOT. I loved the truck, I would like to find another one. I really like the C/K body style. Not real fond of the newer body styles, well I do like the 03-07s. I have a 2000 CC 2500HD now and wouldnt trade it for the world, it has 240k on the clock and when it goes its either getting a new crate motor or a slightly massaged rebuild as long as I dont kill the block

I'll STRONGLY disagree with you on this one. The 4L80E from 99.5+ is a good piece that has had very little trouble if serviced every once in awhile. It was used right on up thru to 06 or so behind the 6.0L in the 2500/3500 and the 8.1L in the AVALANCHE and SUBURBAN. And you really don't ever hear of much trouble out of em.

I have a 2000, CK2500 7.4, 454 big block, and tow approx 10k+ with absolutely no issues.

It gets about 7.5 mpg pulling the 10k+ load.... not sure what it gets with no load as the only thing I use it for is towing the boat.

Thats the downside is the fuel consumption however, 8 miles to the ramp and back I don't really notice.

The upside is it has HUGE torque and if you strap something to it... it will pull it.

Never had any tranny issues, truck has 129k.

Good luck, Jason

My 4L80E had 176K on it when I pulled it out for my DURAMAX swap, and I know of quite a few knocking on 200K right now with zero work ever being done to the trannies except fluid and filter changes. Anything can be tore up though, and most fleet vehicles are driven by people who just don't care(AMC= aint my car, why do I care?), so that isn't a real good judge of the caliber of a tranny. The 4L60E has proven itself to last 200K miles by daily driver people, yet it isn't uncommon to hear of them tearing up at 30-40K miles in fleet trucks.

That's way too much for a 00 with a 454. You can buy ALOT of truck for $10K right now in a gasser.
