Random Quote: You can pretty much fix anything on a boat with 3M 5200
I was close to making a deal with the local Toyota dealer for a new Tundra when this whole recall/no sell thing happened. I decided to look at the F-150s while waiting for the Toyota thing to run its course. The F-150 seems to have a much nicer interior and quieter ride, but has a little less power. I can get the X-plan discount on the Ford, plus they are offering decent rebates plus I can get an extra $1K for trading in my old Toyota. They also will give me alot more on my trade than Toyota was willing to do. Bottom line, I can get a Lariat 4WD, with leather, max tow package, side steps, nav system, 20" wheels, moonroof, etc., for about the same price as was about to pay for a SR5 4WD tundra with cloth seats and 18" steel wheels.
I'm going thru the same process. I have owned a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 extended cab and a Nissan Titan crew cab previously and I am now shopping for a new truck again and I have narrowed my choices to the Titan, F-150 and Tundra.
The Titan offers tremendous value: for $32K I can buy a Titan PRO-4X crew cab with leather ($41K sticker), etc. A similar Ford F-150 FX4 SuperCrew with leather ($42K sticker) can be purchased for $33,500, but for $32K you only get a Tundra DoubleCab TRD with a cloth interior and a base stereo ($37K sticker), a CrewMax model is $1000 more.
I was hoping the Toyota dealers would be more agressive after their recent two week debacle. I would buy a Tundra if it was less money but it's tough to swallow when you can get a loaded up Titan for the same price.
The higher initial purchase price for the Tundra may be justified if you are only keeping the truck for 3-4 years because they do seem to have much better resale value than any other model. However, if you plan on keeping the truck for a longer time resale is probably less important.
I also have a trade so I am looking for the best total package, we'll see what happens this week as we head in to the President's Day holiday.
Most people are not honest enough (even with themselves) to admit that toyota does not give you apples to apples vehicle options.
Toyota traditionally will lower the options package per price comparison.
The other comment made that the f150 felt down on power has another angle.
A truck is not made for its acceleration abilties over its towing capabilities. Transmissions and gearing on trucks plays a bigger role on power delivery than horsepower.
If buying a truck for towing, consider this more important than off the line acceleration, you'll be happier in the long run.
Quite a few buddies have f-150s 4x4 lariat, king ranch the fx4..they all love em and haven't had anything bad to say about them, really nice interior as well.
It sounds to me like youve already made up your mind

IMO a toyota is no better than a ford. Why downgrade your dollar for cloth, smaller wheels, no nav, step bars, sunroof, etc just because its a toyota..

Thanks for the replies. I think I have made up my mind. Just looking for a little reassurance since it's a big investment (for me anyway), and I typically keep my vehicles for a long time. My 12 year old Toyota 4Runner has served me well, so I trust the Toyota brand. I haven't owned a Ford for over 20 years, but I've heard alot of good things lately about them. Plus everyone I know that owns one seems happy. Sooooo, looks like I'll be a Ford owner very soon.
f-150's are incredible trucks and in my opinion no other 1/2 ton can compete with them, their chassis are bar none, as their interiors. The tundras are more than a 1/2 ton, although they are marketed as one. I currently own both a tundra and f150 (business) and i hate the tundra, thought i would try something new and my partner liked the truck, so i said ok why not, and i will never buy one again.
Every owner i talked to before buying loved their Tundras, but on the real side of things - every truck and vehicle on the market does what the owner expects it to do - and as long as it continues to do that "its the best vehicle".
Does the tundra do what i want? sure, but driving the ford daily means i had something to compare it to, and i like its way of doing everything much better.
I can't get over the fact that a Pickup (any brand) will start out with a base price of say 22K and when loaded is over 42K, over 20K in options!! For the same cash as one loaded Pickup, I can buy two of the same trucks in a work truck configuration. Do you need or want leather and a moonroof in a truck? These prices are insane, I am frugal (okay cheap) and couldn't stand the thought of buying a truck for the same price as a Luxury car. I'll take a base model and save the other 20K..........

Compare your 12 year old 4 Runner to a 12 year old Explorer.
Compare your 12 year old 4 Runner to a 12 year old Explorer.
That is my biggest concern. But I keep hearing how much Ford has improved. And with the current quality issues with Toyota, they may be comparable.
Nedarb2: That is exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for - thank you!
And yes, trucks these days can cost as much as a luxury car...but they are closer in ride, comfort, finish, etc, than they used to be. So rather than think of it as an overpriced truck, I prefer to think of it as a luxury vehicle than can pull my boat .
I have an '03 XLT I bought new, now has 103,000 miles, reg sched maint is all I have had done to it, new brakes @ 98,000 mi. Tow a 20' boat just about every weekend during warm months. I was going to give it to my son when he turns 16 in two years but I just might keep it. Get the f150.
How about buying AMERICAN? Yup, thats right. Good ol'e Ford, Chevy and Dodge. I have a bunch of old OMC outboards, some from the 60's 70's and 80's that continue to run and run. Same as my Chevy Silverado with almost 170k on it. BUY the FORD F150 and help keep the American Auto Companies thriving.
About the only american truck I would consider is a Ford. Grew up in a ford family, still have a brother who is a die hard ford guy. I since became a Nissan fan, having put 150K on a 2000 xterra (still runs perfect) and now onto a 2007 Titan towing 9000+#'s about 20X a yr. the older american vehicles were junk (had a 1990 T-bird that went through a tranny and head gaskets at 95 and 105K). and wanted something dependable. Never a Toyota fan in general, always felt their SUV's were overpriced and their cars were too sedate for me. Very dependable though.
You probably can't go wrong with any of the 3. To hear the comments on Toyota quality issues is a bit of a joke if you ask me though. Frame rot was taken care of to the extent that owners made money and the accelerator is being taken care of. Considering the number of vehicles they have put out they still have an excellent track record. I still think they tend to be a bit overpriced.
love my titan, my bro inlaw had a new silverdo, put 9,000 miles on it and traded in. he hated that truck. i used it to tow my rig about 45 miles and the dam thing burned just over 1/4 tank. and that was with fuel thing that cuts out the cylinders. my other friend has a 2yo f-150, and its a rattle trap. our fleet trucks are ford and they all suck ( brake issues with every one of them). but i will say i had a 1997 f-150 with the 4.2 v-6, put 170,000 miles and she ran awesome, just not enough balls to tow my 23' laguna w twins. so i traded it in for my titan.

that "fuel thing" you are referring to does not work when in tow. I am not a chevy fan, i dont dislike them either but chevy and dodge are more fuel efficient than, toyo, ford and nissan........by far!!

that fuel thing most definately kicked on. you could feel and hear the engine change "tune" and my titan gets way better gas mileage than that chevy did. like i said, it used over a 1/4 tank towing my boat 45 miles. i still make that tow now. same boat, same marina and my titan doesnt even use half that much. the best he could get was like 15 mpg and that was a highway trip up to new hampshire, not towing anything. thats why he traded in after only 9,000 miles, the fuel economy sucked. ive always been a die-hard chevy guy, and after seeing this with my own eyes. i went to nissan. and i have zero complaints. iam approaching 50,000 miles on my titan. and its ALL good. and i see your from barnegat. then you know the route i take from mt holly. its a straigh shot right down rt 72 to bay ave, to the municipal ramp. and that chevy burned over a 1/4 tank. no bs. when i got home with it i asked him about it. he said "yea it burns some fuel". and not 3 weeks later he traded in
Don't take it the wrong way but there is no way your truck burns 1/2 the fuel of the chevy. It might get better fuel mileage but not 2 times as much.

dude i was there, i did the tow, and i still make that tow with my nissan now. and i know what that chevy burned when i made that tow. i know what he burned when he made his road trip, and his everday commute to work. he only put 9,000 miles on it. then he traded it in. i also used his prior truck a 1999 chevy 4x4 z71, 5.3. and that burned less than his new 2007 silverado. like i said i was always a chevy guy (diehard). and after these experiences i got the nissan. my son has a 2004 4x4 5.3 chevy. he drives home from va. and burns almost a full tank. ive made that trip in my nissan and burned just a tad less than 3/4 tank. maybe there was something wrong with it, but iam on the phone with him right now, and he said "the best mpg i got was right around 15, i hated that truck"
