truck looks sweet and I would say it'll drag 16000 pounds wherever you need to take it....we have a few 650's w/ cummins at work and their strong....and not to bad to drive either....

Like I said, FORD, does not make a 4x4 F650 or 750. lol. By that measure you can get anything in 4x4 from a custom staindpoint, its all about money.

The duramax they use in the 4500's are the same 6.6L V8's they use in the regular pickup line.

In 2003 I looked at everything in the Medium Duty class. Decided on a 2003 FL60 with the CAT. Bought it with a Wil-Ro bed and conversion from Matt Ikard @ Neely Coble in Nashville. At the time I was in the same boat, wearing out 2 One Ton's a year and decided to get something bigger. I also bought a 2005 F450 4X4 a year later, I can tell you this, there is no comparison between the FL and the 450's like some people try. I loved my 450, but the FL walked all over it. Here is some Truck Porn.

FYI - I never had a single problem with the height of the FL when towing, in most case the necks had to be fully retracted, but it was fine. The truck was on air, the cab, the front seats, and the hitch

My 2007 Dmax is holding up very well. 94K miles in 2 years. 0 I mean 0 problems.

My Ex Pulling Truck ran well too. 113K miles no problems. Still running around PA. I bought it with 110K on the clock. This is what I did with it.

Thanks, but when you figure in the lifespan of a one ton, when hauling heavy and the FL you come out WAY ahead.

Every truck and motor has it's good and it's bads. Some more than others, in the end it's a personal choice.

Yes, because the powerstrokes never had a problem eating exhaust seats or leaking oil from around the injector cups.

I'm a big fan of the Cummins engine, and the Ford/Navistar/International diesels aren't slouches, but the Isuzu/Duramax is right up there with the best of them.

Those are known problems on some DMAX motors. But the same kind of thing can be said for all motors. I have owned numerous 7.3L both OBS and NBS, and still have a couple, '98 12V, '01 24V, and a '03 24V, 2 6.0L's, and one LBZ, and one LB7. Each of them had their own individual problems. Some more than others.

Y'all have to read the whole thread .
They are not using the V8 [ 6600 Durasissy ]
And YES it's a INLINE 6 , BUT, it's a 7.8 liter motor
The Duramax Diesel 7800 is an "Inline 6" commercial truck diesel, currently used in well over 300,000 trucks worldwide.

Y'all should realize that REAL Diesel motors only have 6 cyl. LOL

4500's can't be had with the 7800. If you buy a 4500 with a DMAX it's basically the same motor that is in the 2500 and 3500's.

What part of the 1 ton trucks are you wearing out? If it's the engine/trans, I'd seriously look at swapping in a DT466 into a 1 ton. The 1993-1995 models had the P pump like the B series Cummins. You can turn up the pump easily for 1000+ ft lbs easily. The wet sleeve design is very durable as well.

Budgets are subjective. I've got $85,000 worth of trucks in the shop right now and I can't get to a job.

This sounds alright, but I don't know if I want to sink any more $$ into something that has proven it can't stand up to my rigors.

If you're going to look at something as big as a Chevy 4500 you should also look at the F650, not the 450/550 and as stated below you get Cummins or Cat diesel choices. Given the latest F-350s can tow something like 24,000 lbs in gooseneck configuration the F-650 should fit the bill nicely.
I've made my way through the Big Detroit 3, for the past 6 or 8 years I've been running Fords, maybe its time for a change of scenery. I'm kinda down on my trucks right now. I started by looking the 4500 because it was different than anything I've owned before. But maybe the M2 is closer to what I need.

100K is a LOT of money, but so is $45K for throw away trucks. I've had it with all 3. I'm not a Ford/Chevy/Dodge or anything else guy. I'll go with what suits me best, most cost effective and best for my business. If someone made a truck in their backyard that suited my needs, I'd buy it.

I spent 3 hours at an International Dealer tonight. Went there on friends advice. The salesman was great, very informative, no hard sell, nothing but advice and details on the International 4300.

Then we went out to drive the truck. I had a hard time driving around the parking lot it was so uncomfortable. The seats were a glorified 2x12..

I then realize that a lot of trucks I'm looking at on the internet have been fitted with aftermarket stuff, including seats and consoles..

I hate to dismiss the truck because of seats, but this was awful!

Where to look at aftermarket stuff for these medium duty trucks!

We looked hard at the internationals. The fit and finish was cheap compared to the freightliner. I was not impressed at all.

Thanks for your help, I'm glad I was not alone here. I ask the saleman what he liked about the 4300 over the M2 and he said, "the fit and finish".

I was shocked. I felt like I was driving a 1976 Econoline Van.

You can swap out the seats easily for air ride seats.

The truck I test drove had upgraded air ride seats. We got in and our knees hit the dash board, they don't go back far enough (I'm 5'10 my brother is 6-3) and the backrest didn't tilt back past straight up and down, but these were an upgraded seat for sure.

I wonder where I can buy seats like those shown in the above pictures? From the truck at Neely Coble?

National makes a great air ride seat. Very comfortable, lot of adjustments to get it just right.

I will say however that the CXT is absolute junk. As a matter of fact all of the internationals in my mind are crap. The fit and finish is horrible. Front ends seriously leave something to be desired. Not only that the DT466 is definetly not the same engine as yesteryear. I constantly hear of Oring's cracking, coolant leaks and oil leaks. We have had two DT466E's and they were constantly in the shop with coolant leaks. I will never buy another international. I am not 100% sure but I believe the DT466 is not a wet sleeve motor too.
