Default Rear end shot in 04 Dodge Hemi

The last couple of weeks while driving my truck, it sits most of the time and is used for towing boat and atv back and forth to hunting club, every now and then the ABS and Brake light would come on. The brakes seemed fine and when I would cut the truck off the lights would go off for a while.

Well had to pick up one of my company cars from the shop today and left my Dodge to get the sensor repaired, kind of what mechanic thought it would be.

As luck goes I get a dreaded phone call about 2 hours later. He told me when he pulled the cover off the rear end there was a part in there that had broken and basically the part had destroyed my trucks rear end. It had cut a deep grove in part of the rear end, wish I had taken some pics.

Have no idea what happend and the bitch of it was trying to find a used one, new one was $2500 plus. He was able to locate a used one on a wreck for about half that.

Well as the say SHIT HAPPENS.

There is a Dodge 11.5" Rear end on www.cumminsforum.com in the stuff for sale forum for $300.00 and it's around your neck of the woods.

I had to rebuild the rear end in my last 2 Dodges. a 2001 and a 2005. Both started to go around 160,000 miles.

First cost $500 and the second was $700.

Assuming you need a new ring and pinion, bearings, and install, 2500 seems a little high, even for a dealer. I would talk to them, find out how much they are quoting you for labor and parts.... labor should be somewhere around 4-8hrs+1hr diagnosis. parts shouldn't be more than 600.... never hurts to ask.

Make damn sure that it isnt just the machining of the rear end. I know on my truck a dodge 2500 there is something that looks like the gears cut into the rear end but it is just the way its machined. Not many of these rear ends letting go and if it is still driving fine, I am suspecting your mechanic is taking you for a ride.

No problem with mechanic, trust me on this one.

Meant to add I did talk with 2 other shops and was quoted the same price for the most part, also this shop will be a client of mine starting in January.

They actually did a very stand up thing on my daughters car this past summer, they replaced timming belt and day she picked it up power steering belt came off and knocked timming belt cover off and destroyed valves and head had to be machined.

They were very quick to point out, before I even asked them, that this was their fault and they ate the entire repair and still apologize for this problem and inconvience.

They also do a LOT of work for me throughout the year on personal vehicles and my two company cars, needless to say they love to see me pull in

My '04 Dodge 2500 came with a 7/70 warranty. You should be covered, $100 deductible.

Ditto, that Truck should have 7/70 Powertrain. Call the Dealer and have them run a function 14 on your VIN.

Could depend on exactly when he bought it - if he's even the first owner. You have to transfer the warranty if you were the 2nd owner, and it took me 3 dealers before I found one that knew how to do that... Although yes it if it an "04" then there's a good chance...

Have owned a number of Dodge/Chrysler pickups, vans and mini vans, and AFAIK, the old owner is right. Most of those longer powertrain warranties won't transfer to a third owner. I don't know of any place on line to check, though there may be one. As said, I'd ask dealer.

I'd like to know how it is that you never knew there was a problem with your rear end?

Never heard a thing at all and it was working fine. Only way we discovered it was the ABS/Brake light would come on every now and then and figured it was a sensor. Mechanic said the metal savings were getting on the sensor and that was what was causing the light to go off and on.

Honestly never heard or felt a thing, in fact trucks sits for the most part and only pulls boat back and forth to lake and few trips a year to coast and runs up and down road to my hunt club which is only 30 miles away.

Also truck has duals with flowmasters and I would imagine that kept me from hearing anything at all

I'm not positive, but I think you're out of luck if you're the 3rd owner. Worth a call, though. Also surprised at the cost to repair but ??

Metal shavings covering the sensor? Guess it did grenade itself then, never know what the previous owners did to it.
