Your clutch fan has engaged due to temperature. When the motor is first started the fan runs until the fluid in the fan clutch loosens up. When you say a short time what do you mean? 4x4 with 410 gears used to make that fan roar on takeoff most of that time. What year is your truck?

Just watch the temp guage - you should hear the fan come on at a certain temp and the temp needle will start dropping in a few seconds. When it gets to a certain point the fan will stop. Once you learn these two points (which will be particular to your engine/gearing/loadcombination) you'll be more informed as to what's going on under the hood.

Oz,
Just a thought -

This something you may want to consider.
http://www.uhaul.com/hitches/transmission-cooler.aspx

By adding the transmission cooler you will keep the temps in the Tranny much lower. The fastest way to rip up the tranny is to overheat it.

Its just a cheap insurance policy and places like U haul or you local mechanic can add it for low money.

You didnt say what trans you have. With a Dmax diesel or the 496 cu gas ( 8.1 ) it would be an Allison trans. They have a cooler with a fan that comes on at about 210 degrees ( that trans temp, not engine ).

The cooler/fan is under the truck on drivers side. If the noise is up front, its the engine fan.
