Default Brake actuator

How can I test that my actuator is working properly? Right now the brakes are not attached and I want to see if the actuator works before I order and install new brakes or do I need a new actuator as well? Trailer is about 15 years old but not used for about 6-7 years.

Why not be safe and just buy a new actuator! If the trailer is 15 years old and you are adding new brakes, do it right and replace the actuator too. Surge actuators are not expensive.

Plug the line OUT of the actuator, fill the reservoir if needed and pump the actuator just as if the brakes were hooked up...if it builds pressure, then good chance it's still good...may take several attempts...question; do you know how or do you still have owners manual describing bleeding your brakes...if so, follow those. if it's had a chance to dry out, gaskets and O-rings mighta dried out, too...if it won't build pressure, you might consider a rebuild to replace those...good luck and let us know how it comes out

Capt Matt and Reelapeelin
That is what I was tending towards replacing but just wanted to know if it was worth the effort to check it before purchasing a new one. Sounds like more trouble than worth to check it.

I agree, but you sounded pretty determined...
