Default Tacoma v. F150

Used, 2005-2006, 30K-50K miles

Not towing anything. Will be used as a daily driver. Fuel economy really any better with the V6 (Taco) than the V8 (F150)?

If not towing, Tacoma all the way

The Tacoma will tow pretty good also. To me the trucks are in two different leagues. Both are great trucks.

That doesn't answer his question.

The honest answer is no, the Tacoma V6 does not get better fuel economy.

The Tacoma V6 crew cab averages about 16 or 17 MPG, so does a Ford or Chevy 1/2 ton.

The Tacoma is good mechanically but watch out for the frame rust issue....I'm not sure what model year this problem extends but there is a big issue with some of the older ones frames rotting out to the point where there are holes in the frame above the rear axle...Toyota has extended the rust through warrantee to 15 years from what I heard on certain model years...but the buy back offered was only if you had holes rotted through...if you had a lot of surface rust maybe not and you'd have to wait till it got bad...

The Tacoma is a great all around truck. I had an 03 club cab prerunner with the V6. I used it for one season to tow my Sea Hunt 202 which was 4500lbs boat, motor and trailer. I had 39000 miles on it when I traded it in late 05 for a Tundra. Never had any issues with the truck and would by another in a heart beat if I towed a smaller boat.

Sounds about right. 20+-1 commuting and 11+-1 towing puts my average around 16 or 17 in a double cab long bed 4x4 with Snugtop camper shell.

My FJ is comparable weight, same engine and tranny. I average 18 around town, low 20's on the highway

I had a 2002 Tacoma Doublecab 4x4 and ran it hard... offroad, had it airborne. It took every bit of abuse I could throw at it. My little sis has it now.

Just sold my 05 Tacoma DC 4x4 V6 with 33" tires, and 54k miles on it...... I was not impressed with the fuel economy. Granted I had the oversized tires which contributed to it. As for reliability I think it will be better than the Ford. I only had one problem with it and it was a front differential leak after this muddin trip which was fixed under warrenty. Go with the Tacoma.

Not bad on pulling power either.

oversized mud tires is THE fastest way to destroy fuel economy

Since you are shopping used, you will find many cab configurations, leather vs cloth, 2 vs 4wd, bed length, etc, so finding the right vehicle "combo" and deal for your use is more important than buying a brand. If fuel economy is #1 consideration the smaller F150s of course will be better on fuel than the longer longer/heavier versions. Being a Ford guy, I appreciate the look at F150s. Happy shopping!

Ford F 150 all the way !
Better truck.
Way more to chose from = lower purchase price.
More after market.
More repair outlets/parts= lower repair cost.
Great service history.
Lower Ins. cost.
Lower cost per mile.
