Ford F 150 all the way !
Better truck.
Way more to chose from = lower purchase price.
More after market.
More repair outlets/parts= lower repair cost.
Great service history.
Lower Ins. cost.
Lower cost per mile.
WWC,
I have been considering a dual cab, long bed, 4x4.
If you can pull and stop that Sailfish with that Tacoma then I should have no trouble pulling and stopping a Triton 240 LTS with a single 250 Verado.
This is not really a comparison. One is full size the other is not. They will get around the same mileage. The Ford will have more room and ride better and will have a larger bed. Regardless of what most people like to think, reliability is about the same.

Oh, OK, how many have you owned? Seriously, Toyota makes good cars, but others have rapidly closed the gap. I have owned two F-150s and they have been trouble free.
Buy what suits you, but if a guy drives a Bayliner, he'll probably tell its the best boat out there!
When I was truck shopping I really wanted a Tacoma or an F150. I ended up getting a Nissan Frontier. When I saw it in person I liked the interior much better than the tacoma, and it has more hp and more torque on regular gas. The tacoma max HP and Torque was lower than the Frontier and required 93 octane. The biggest selling factor though was the price. The Frontier was thousands less than the Tacoma with the same features.
So far I have 60k miles on the truck and have had no issues. The only thing I have done is change the oil, and put on a new set of tires. I don't do any major towing with it but it seems to pull just fine.

Go with the F-150 have more room and comfort.
In the northeast more room and a larger bed isn't always a good thing. Its true the Tacoma is 4.3" narrower and doesn't have an 8' bed option. For a daily driver I think the consideration that 6'2.6" x 18'5" fits in more parking spaces than 6'7" x 20'8.4" is relevant. Of course you could get the 6' bed or regular cab F150 as well...
I have had an '05 Tacoma x-cab v6 4x4 6sp manual tranny TRD for 4 years. I commute 110 miles per day, and my average mpg is about 16.5mpg. If I could do it over again, I would have gotten a full size truck and still have the same fuel economy.
I had an F-150 and I currently own a Tacoma. Neither were daily drivers but I would choose the F-150 over the Tacoma if I were buying a new one today. I did not have any problems with the F-150 and the Tacoma has been problem free too. The F-150 offers a better ride, more room and equal fuel economy. I like the looks of the F-150 vs. the Tacoma.
I own a 2004 6cyl Tacoma I purchased brand new. I just passed 107,000 miles and beyond oil and tires I have only had to replace a thermostat and brakes. I went with the Tacoma for the reputation of the bullet proof reliability and so far it's lived up to that. I don't have first hand experience with the F150. I get 19 mpg (avg. of highway and city).

I've had a Tacoma and now this FJ. Before that I was into sports cars
My parents and family have had many F150's over the years, a diesel dually chevy, and multiple explorers and explore sport trac things. Not impressed with ford's product durability, or GM's for that matter. My dodge experience is limited but the ones I'm familiar with have held up well.

GM and Ford durability problems? Dodge has held up well?
We now know to disregard wildgeechi posts !!!

I can only speak from my personal experience and that is what it is. I've seen 2 F350 diesels returned under lemon laws, and I've seen 2 dodge cummins diesels tow campers all over the US without ever having a problem. I have been stranded in GA from a dually chevy.
Well Ive wanted an F150 for a long time Im just looking into the "cost of ownership" issue I guess. Ive driven both (the F150 more so than teh Taco) and the F150 rides a lot better and does have far more room.
Basically Im looking for 4x4, extended cab, 6' bed. THATS IT. (If I go with the F150 it will have leather interior)
No frills fishing truck. Guess I'll really have to think this through and do more research before I make the purchase. Thanks for the info guys.
WWC, Did you tow that sailfish all the time with the Tacoma? It appears you would be way over the tow limit! What does the sailfish wiegh?
OP: As you can see, the opinions are mixed. Mileage has got to be very similiar. Also, read reviews online and you should be able to have a lot of questions answered for you. Personally, I'd go Tacoma, but is just a preference.

I tow my boat with my FJ, and it is probably about the same (now that I see it has twins I had to edit this). something like 7k-8k or so. Same engine and transmission, and axles as a tacoma. I took the liberty of putting a 30,000lb GVWR tranny cooler for a class A motorohome in though. Don't want any hot tranny fluid pushing the truck this hard. And yeah we're both over our limit
I know someone who had a Tacoma, mileage is not any better than Ford or chevy 1/2 ton and the tranny went out at 100K. IT never towed anything, all empty driving.
