I have been excited for this debut for quite some time. The 4runner has finally received a makeover and was debuted today at the Texas State Fair. I saw a couple of spy photos and I didn't think it looked to bad (see pics below) although there was some talk about engine choices. The vehicle is keeping the same pricing as the previous gen 4runner which is good. Now the bad...no V8. There was hope they would put the Tundra 4.6L w/ 310hp and 328lb Tq. Instead Toyota upped the V6 hp to 27 and 278lb tq. But the Towing Capacity is only 5,000 pounds! I was shocked Not only did they drop the V8 but they dropped the towing capacity and added a 4 Cylinder!!! The V6 2WD gets 17/23mpg and the 4 Cyl gets 18/23mpg. Why would anyone get the 4 Cyl??? From the initial reviews, it is a beast off-road. Maybe in a year, they will add a V8 and push towing capacity to 7500-8000lbs? If I decide to get 4runner instead of new, I'll definetly be looking slight used V8. Very disappointing of this new model. Any thoughts??
Was hoping for more as well. Why have body on frame still and only 5K towing, no V8? Pretty plain looking as well. It appears to have been de-contented.
No 6-Speed. The 5k towing doesn't make sense to me. I believe it is built on a truck chasis unlike the Highlander (Camry). I think I actually like the previous generation better. The truck is suposely superb off road, but how many soccer mom's take it off-road. If it had a V8...or could tow say 6500 (Tacoma), I may consider one as the next vehicle. 5k towing seems to be too low for that vehicle. Could it be an error? The numbers are not from toyota's website but rather car review sites.
Doesn't look that much different than my '05. But my '05 has a V8..I guess I'll be holding on to it for the forseeable future. It has been the best car I have ever owned.
Usually tow ratings are based on a chasis not engine, for example the v6, v8, and v8 twin turbo S cayenne all have the same tow rating though the first has HALF the 600hp of the latest.
I think toyota is making a big mistake by leaving this gap.. not everyone wants (or can afford) the mammoth 50k dollar sequoia to tow their boat

Not really true; The 4Runner v6 has a 5K# towing limit; the V8 has a 7300# limit.

Actually pretty close to true. If you research it you'll find that the factory hitch for the v6 does not allow weight distribution and if you don't use weight distribution on the V8 it is also limited to 5k#.
If you put the V8 or good aftermarket hitch on the V6 I believe it is rated to around 6700lbs (with weight distribution).

I went here and added a 2wd V8 4 runner SR5 and a 2wd V6 4runner SR5 under the "add vehicle", then clicked on specs, the capacities. I even downloaded and quickly read all 3 of their "Toyota guide to towing" booklets. Nowhere did it state anything like this.
I even looked in my '05 4 Runner V8 owners manual, and didn't see that there, either. If Toyota is stating that I need a weight distributing hitch to tow 7300#, they are hiding it.
I have an 07 with the V8, Looks like I too will be holding onto it for a while. Thats nothing new to me, I have a 1998 Sienna that just past 279,000 and still runs great! Before I bought the 4runner the Sienna towed my 155 Edgewater fine.
I'll keep my '04-my wife loves it and has no interest for a new car(thank goodness)
I also, like the others, assume dropping the V8 and introducing the 4 banger is due to Government regulations. If you'll remember back in the day though, the 4-runners all had a 4 banger, a 6 cyl was a big option...I am talking 80's-I still love those old ones.
I just can't believe they are going to compete with competition by dropping a V8 and adding a 4 Cylinder. Not to mention the tow capacity of a measly 5k pounds. Heck the Rav4 can tow 3500. Also, how does the Highlander differ from the 4runner? Both V6, both tow 5k lbs, except one has a car chasis and one truck. I will be looking for an older 4runner with v8.
Gf- Your right the Pathfinder has a V8 which is a nice option.
I was looking to lease another 4 Runner V8, Looks like I might have to buy my '08 V8 when the lease ends.

Hopefully they will bring out a V8 next year or soon after. If not I guess I'll have to keep my most powerful 4Runner ever made.
The article says the revised V6 has 10 more HP than the old optional V8, they also said it feels quicker and gets better mileage, sounds like a winner.
I agree with the need for the V-8...V-6s are fine if you are not towing but a V-8 gives torque that a V-6 just doesn't have...I would not ever want to have a 4 cyl in a vehicle that heavy no matter what transmission they put in it...the Toyota V-6 is a great engine but they tend to put out their max torque at fairly high revs which isn't the best for towing...torque peaks at 4400 rpm (278 ft lbs)...my Jeep Grand Cherokee with the Hemi has 375 ft lbs and weighs about the same....
