Default Coil went bad... not under warranty?

A coil went bad in my wifes truck ('06 Envoy). They are telling me that this is a "wearable" part and that it isn't covered under the warranty. We did get the extended warranty. This sounds like BS to me. I know brakes and tires are considered "wearable," but a coil? If that's the case, aren't piston rings, valve guides and just about every other part on an engine "wearable."

What do you think?

It's part of the emissions system, technically. The coils do fail occasionally, but are not like sparkplugs.

How much does it cost? I would assume it is just plug and play?

most extended warranties cover ignition coils I would question that decision, Coil's are not a wearable part.

If it is still covered under the original factory warranty, then the part should be covered. Also, if it is out of the factory warranty, then the extended warranty should take care of it. It it does not, then the warranty is not worth the paper it is written on, and you should ask for an immediate refund of the pro-rated balance.

By the way, a coil for that envoy should not be that expensive, you can get it from several places for around $35. I think the part number is D1935E AC Delco coil.

Thanks for the replies. I can't see how they are saying it is not covered. I'm out of town for work, so the wife is home by herself. Not sure how much the part is, but I'm sure you can take the price at NAPA and double it if it's coming from a dealer. She needed her car, so we didn't have much of a choice other than having the dealer repair it. When I get home, I'm definately going to go in there and argue my point. It's very annoying... especially since I have bought 2 trucks there recently, my wifes Envoy and I have an '07 Seirra. I've dropped quite a bit of $$ there, so for them to nickle and dime me like this really pisses me off.

04' GMC Envoy with a 4.2-6cyl pt# 12612369 and it lists for $80.00. My book lists .1 hr mech labor for replacement. (Although most dealerships have a 1 hour minimum charge) If I were to replace it, (without diagnosis), it would cost you $93.28.

You have bought 2 trucks recently, complain to the shop manager. If they don't want to warranty it, pay for the diagnosis and tell them to have a great day. Take it elsewhere. You now know what it is (if they properly diagnosed the issue)

If the shop manager doesn't do anything for you go to your salesman or the sales manager. Tell him what happened and that he can kiss any more business of yours goodbye.

If that doesn't get any action you need to find a new dealer.

Ask them to show you the section under the warranty that says it is not covered. If they can point it out and its clear its not covered then its done if they cannot do this then state your case.
