Default Tires!!!

OK, time for new tires on the truck. I wore out my Michelin LTX M/Ss at about 34k miles. They were a great smooth highway tire but grip at the ramp and in any kind of mud was poor. Looking to go back to an all-terrain tread and am looking at the following:

1. BFG A/Ts
2. Firestone Destination A/Ts (great price, more than $40 less per tire that BFGs)
3. Bridgestone Dueler Revo A/Ts
4. Goodyear Silent Armor (priciest but supposedly wear well)

I am leaning towards either the BFGs or Firestones, I know the BFGs are great tires, just a little worried about tread life, and the price on the Firestones are tough to beat...truck is an '05 2500HD Chevy 4x4 Duramax that tows a lot (frequently over 10k lbs) and spends a lot of time on the highway...

I've got a set of General Grabber AT2s and they have been the best set of tires I've bought so far. Awesome aggressive tread, 35k miles on them and they still have half the tread left on the tire. They don't come in as many sizes as the others though but some of them are E rated and could be something worth looking into. And the price was about 75 bucks less per tire than the BFG A/Ts

just looked on tirerack.com for the tires and if they have the right size listed for your truck, 245/75/16 in e-rated, then they run about 130 per tire

Just finished putting 45 thousand miles on the BF All Terrain T/A KO's. Great tire at the boat ramp. Great all around tire. You can't go wrong with them. Just upgraded to BF Mud Terrain T/A KM2's, more aggressive tread design for offroad, but they now slip at the ramp.

I am surprised at the short tread life you got with the Michelin's. I know some guys that got double that tread life out of them and swear by them, and they also have a duramax diesel like myself. My father has the General AT's on a F350 and likes them.

I put Dueler A/T Revos on my Titan and I thought they were a great tire. The Firestone Destination A/T is built similarly and should be less expensive.

Make sure you are buying LT rated tires for your 3/4 ton truck, most 1/2 tons run P rated tires.

Goodyear Silent Armor - Great ride not too loud. I just wore out my last set. I have a Z71 Tahoe and put 95K miles on them. Yes, 95K. I had them balanced and rotated every 5K miles. I drive about 85 miles a day at about 70 mph and it is mostly highway. Good luck.

I used BFG AT's for a long time - many sets. They're a great all around AT tire (on and off road and in the snow) and they wear well (I got 70K+ miles on every set). The biggest downside I found with them is they don't have very good wet weather grip after about 1/2 worn. At the suggestion of many I tried Revo AT's and those tires are definitely excellent. Great wet or dry adhesion and good in the snow. However, they are expensive and wore out quite a bit faster than the BFG's. I am currently running a set of Firestone Destination AT's. IMO they handle and stick every bit as well as the Revo's, are wearing far better and were much less money. The only possible downside is they are a bit noisier.

Thanks for all the replies, the current set are LT285/75/R16s, but they are D rated tires as that size did come as an E rated tire. I think the E rating is crucial for tread life on these heavy diesel trucks, should have stated the size and rating before...I had a feeling that the Revos would not last as long either, they seem to be a soft compound...keep it coming, makes the decision much easier! The noise is not the big of a deal to me, can't hear much over the turbo and straight pipe at highway speeds anyways...

Check out ProComp's Xtreme All Terrains. The guys on dieselplace seem to be getting good mileage out of them.

I've got the BFG AT's on my Excursion w/ 57k miles right now. While the tread life is still good on the tires, the sidewalls on all 4 have started peeling off. It looks like dry rot from a distance, but it's not - really strange. It's just the 1st layer of black rubber over the white wall totally disintergrating. It's frustrating b/c the tires are structurally ok, but look like crap.

They have good grip, and a reasonable volume on the hwy.

I'm looking at replacements as well. Like what I've heard about the Dueler's, and also had good luck w/ Cooper Discoverers - lasted really well on a heavy 2500 '89 Suburban 4x4. May try them again.

Also agree - definitely go with the Load E rated tires - especially as you are towing pretty good loads.

I've had the Destinations (LT rating) on an Expedition for 4 years. I only put about 8-10 K on a year but half of that is towing 4000+ lbs boat/trailer, I still have over half tread on them. All around a great tire, my only complaint is that they tend to grab and throw small rocks, not many but its the only gripe I have with them.

Joey,
How the heck did you wear out a set of LTX M/S in only 34k miles. I got 60-70k miles out of the last 3 sets on my truck. Think you've got a Dmax, right? They would go 70-80k on my 1/2 tons.

Anyway, this time around I moved up to a bigger tire and had to go with the LTX AT2's (265/75 R16 E rated). They have MUCH better grip than the M/S tire. Tried to break em loose in the rain the other day w/o going nuts and couldn't do it. Don't know how long they'll go as far as miles.... just got these 1,000 miles ago.

I liked my Michelin LTX AT's 10 times as much as my BFG all terrains. I'll never own BFG's again unless they are going on a jeep. The Michelins are quiter, have better grip on wet surfaces, and the tread life is awesome.

on my ram, my OE michelins lasted almost 35k miles. They were a nightmare on wet roads at about 30k miles. I would never buy them again

Same problem on my Dodge and co workerf Tundra

I consistently get 65,000 miles out of a set of Yokohamas and if I wasn't on the roas as mush I could probabally squeeze 75,000 miles out of them.

I think the fact that they were D rated tires didn't help and yes I have a Duramax. I had been rotating them every 5000-7500 miles as well, the heavy hauls long distance I think killed them not being an E rated tire...

You may want to check out a tirerack .com for reviews. Just replaced my BFG A/T's with Goodyear SilentArmor. The reviews kept me away from some other popular reccomendations for my Tundra.

I use to have an '04 Chevy 2500HD 4x4 Duramax. I had BFG A/T's, Cooper Discover STT's, Nitto Terra Grapplers and Pro Comp X Terrains. I had a 6 inch lift on my, so they were all 35-12.50R18. I don't know what size tire you are looking at, but if it is over a 305 or 33-12.50 I would stay away from the BFG A/T. I couldn't keep mine balanced. Out of the ones I had on my duramax that I liked the most were the Pro Comps. It was a mud tire but it wasn't to loud, they road fairly well. I now have an '08 Tundra with a 6 inch lift on it. I just got rid of my Nitto Mud Grapplers two days ago and got a set of 35-12.50R20 Toyo Open Country M/T's and I love them so far. I would go with the Toyo's if it were me. They are a 45-50k mile tire even on a heavy truck like yours. They aren't loud and ride great. If you didn't want to go with those I would probably try the BFG A/T's as long as they are smaller than a 33-12.50.
