I'm in the early stages of figuring out my next ride. I want some real life responses from owners. I know that the first ones had some rear end issues but I believe they worked them out. It would be the crew cab 4x4.
I tow a 1990 Mako 230 WA about 1,000 miles per year tops.
I had a 2004 Nissan Titan SE crew cab 4X4 (a very early build date, in fact) that I purchased new in 2005 and sold in 2007 after 37,000 trouble free miles. I had a recall performed for the rear seat belts and the front brakes but that was it for maintenance other than a few oil changes and new tires.
I loved the truck, my family loved the truck, my friends loved the truck, I would buy the truck again. In fact, I looked at a new '09 LE crew cab just a few months ago.
I only sold the Titan because my commute changed rather dramatically in '07 and it was no longer prudent to have a 14 MPG truck as a daily driver.
I own a 2007 Titan LE 4X4 tow package short bed 4 door. I tow a Sailfish 2660 that runs low 9000#'s loaded. It has no problem towing in New england and I believe some of the earlier rear end issues were rectified beginning in 2007. The truck has a very tight turning radius that allows me to squeeze into tight gas stations and ramps. Also has some balls and gets out of its own way easily.
The mileage does suck though. with the hilly terrain, i avereage 7 MPG. I have a lead foot though. Around 14 not towing.
I love the truck and would buy one again (second Nissan for me). The only limiting factor is I am at max legal capacity towing. If I go bigger I will need something in the 1 ton category.
I had a 2004 Titan LE with ~150,000 miles. Great truck with very few problems. Just traded it in on a 2010 Armada. Obviously, I don't stray far from the barn. That should tell you what I think.
I know, I know, I know...you are asking about Titans, however for 2010 the Tundra has a newer 4.6 motor that will tow heavy, but is a little easier on the wallet. It was engineered with a 6 speed tranny to get a little better towing mpg as well as up to 20 mpg empty..
Triumphrick - I would be buying used and less than $20k so a new Tundra doesn't fit the bill - I wish though. I'm a Toyota fan but I don't think the 4.7 in the first version will have the balls.
I've got an 04 Titan with just over 100k and it's a great truck. My longest tow was my 21' enclosed trailer packed full of ATV's and gear (approx 7k) from VA to CA and back, truck did great. One of my rear axle seals started leaking at around 60k and the dealer replaced the entire axle with the updated version.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy another when I get ready.

The new Toy is a 4.6, the old one was a 4.7 which I used to own and liked it very much. That being said I test drove the new 4.6 and was pleasantly surprised with power and performance.
LOVE my 2005 Titan. Towed my Boat (5000lbs) from Eastern GA to South LA with NO problems at all. Plenty of power to spare and handles great. Next truck will be a Titan, no doubt.
05 crew 4x4. This is our first pick up truck. Cant believe it took us so long cause we love it and use the dam thing every weekend. We put 13k on her last year and a secondary car. We tow our 27 contender which is a big boat. Love it, tows it like its not there. 60 on the highway no problem. We may put airbags on it just for a lil extra bump in the back and plus the on board air would be really nice when you have a tri axle trailer.

I know you're looking at the Titan, but I have little brother the Frontier and couldn't be happier. I have just under 60k and haven't had a single issue so far. The max tow rating is 6500 lbs, which is really high for a mid size truck.
I've been really supprised by how good the 4wd system is. I used to do a lot of surf fishing, and have gotten stuck on the beach in a lot of small trucks and suvs, a jeep cherokee, a ford ranger, a ford explorer, and a few others, but with my nissan it never happened once.
My only complaint is I should have listened to the wife and bought the crew cab rather than the standard extended cab.
I love my Armada but hate the name. I think the 2010 is the last Year of production for the Titan. I heard Dodge is going to make them now. If you get one, get the air shocks.
Since reading your responses, I've looked into the Frontier - which I like but I'm still skeptical about its ability to tow my rig (30 feet from tongue to motor @ around 5,500 lbs). They don't seem to be much, if any, cheaper than the Titan. I realize they will get better gas mileage but I only drive about 8,000 miles/year total. I need to see if I can find one to hook up to my boat and see for myself.

Hmmm 5500 may be a little much but you're only saying 1000 miles a year right? Hills or flat? I pull 4500 or so with my Pathfinder and it does fine.

Yeah if they were close in price I would have gotten the Titan too. At the time a Titan was about 10 grand more, and I don't have a heavy boat to worry about towing.
My only hesitation about buying a Titan is they are discontinuing them in a year so that could really hurt your resale. Just something to think about.
got an 07 titan , really like it plenty of power and good handling, never checked gas mileage, guess doesnt matter at this point , only got 17000 miles on it only use it for towing boat which is around 4000lbs and does it with ease, i have the kingcab(extended) 4x4 its alittle tight for big guys in the back. but so far so good but not many miles either.
I have an 06 4x4crewcab with the short bed. Love the truck, previously a ford truck owner but I really like this truck more, 70,000 miles with only tires, brake pads and normal maintenance. They are prone to rear axle leaks in the 04-06 models though. Also had two recall items on mine, one was a wiring harness for the fan, and I forget the other, something minor. Tows my 20' proline on dual axle like it wasnt even there....
Kone - I live in Greenville, SC. I usually pull it to Lake Keowee which is in the SC mountains - it's about 40 miles from my house and I rarely get above 55 mph due to stop lights and stop signs. Maybe once a year I take it to the SC coast which is about 4 hours on the interstate - at times it can be quite hilly.
I like the Pathfinders as well and that might be an option. I know someone that tows a 23 Key West around with one with no issue. I don't want to dog out my next vehicle but want to be realistic about how much I actually tow vs. something that fits my daily needs and keeps the wife happy. She hates the old Tahoe that I have now and I don't think she's going to be wild about a pick up.
