Default reverse solinoid

i have a triple axle float on trailer which is equipped with what i believe to be a brake solinoid which is fed 12 volts with the reverse lights, yet i still have to use a large pin while backing up to prevent brake lock up. is this solinoid supposed to prevent brake lock up when backing? i can here it click when it is fed 12 volts, and the wiring harness is wired correctly. thanks in advance

This backup solenoid system should in fact lock out the brakes, and the pin is simply a manual method of doing the same thing. If the system is working properly you should not need to do both things in order to back up.

dem hit the nail on the head. However, be sure that your actuator is fully extended, and has no pressure on the brakes, before putting the tow vehicle in reverse. My solenoid only isolates the actuator, so if there is already some pressure on the brakes, it will hold that pressure on the brakes when activated. Sometimes if you are trying to back up an incline, you must start backing up on the flat to be sure there is no brake pressure trapped by the solenoid when you shift into reverse.

so to clarify when the solinoid is activated the surge function should not surge? it should remain as if the pin were installed? thanks

it may still compress some, but no pressure should get past the solenoid to the brakes.

When you are not in reverse, the solenoid is not energized and the valve is open. Brake fluid is free to move and actuate the brakes.

When you are in reverse, the solenoid energizes and the valve closes preventing brake fluid from going to the brake cylinders. The coupler would still move, but the closed solenoid valve prevents brake fluid from moving through the system.
