Default Dodge Death Wobble

So last night driving home from work, I experience the dreaded Dodge Death Wobble firsthand at 70 mph on Interstate 75 South. It was like I had square front tires with 30 degrees of toe-in. Good thing I am the best driver in the world. (just ask my wife) I expertly reduced speed and got into the fast lane shoulder. Got out and took a look. Everything seemed ok so I crept up to speed and made it home without another occurrence.

Today what shows up in the mail? Dodge Recall H46.

Here's a video and news report about it:

"Caster shimmy". Thought that went away with the solid front axle. It is scarey, ain't it??

Sometimes something as simple as tire pressure can induce it. Does your dodge have a steering damper on the tie link??

There are a number of factors blamed for the death wobble, most seem to think worn ball joints or low air pressure, I upgraded my steering to the new style and have yet to experience it on my dodge, but when I was younger I had a lifted Cherokee that would turn into a death machine from 35-45 usually a pot hole or a bump in the road set it off.....Death wobbles are a scary feeling but hopefully the dealer can get it sorted out, on a side note I also upgraded my trac-bar and went with a thoren unit, that guy makes some really nice stuff for dodges and if your truck is lifted you can't go wrong with what he offers........ p.m. if you want more info from a guy that's been down this road and done all the research....

Totally stock 06' Power Wagon with 40k. Tire pressure fanatic. Rotate tires religiously. Also check everything several times a month on the shop lift. Original tires though. I've done some reading last night and this morning, seems lots of people have had the dealer replace parts, still no fix. Others have had luck. Going today to put some new sneakers on it. BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain KM2's, stock size LT285/70R17.

The dealer I am taking it to gets about 50k in parts sales from me every year, so I imagine they will take care of the recall without any questions.

On another note, I priced a Kore lift kit $11,245.00 for the parts only!

Yes, factory steering damper. Gonna see if the dealer service dept will replace that along with whatever else it may need.

And what happens if you are towing when this occurs, can't be good. Very scary.

Had a Ford that used to do that. It would rip the wheel out of your hands. A friend borrowed the truck and loaded it with dirt. He called me in a panic after going across a bridge and having the bumps in the bridge set it off. I had a mechanic look at it. He told me it was my tires. Replaced tires and problem solved.

The KM2s are great. Had a set of the 285s on my Rubicon. Rode great and fantastic grip. Quiet. Never had death wobble on my jeeps, but always kept everything tight and new stabilizers.

I've never experienced it in my '07 Dodge 2500 4x4, but I did in a Jeep Wrangler once. It's just a freakish thing that happens with that stlye steering linkage.

I had a 06 with the same problem, if your are running a larger tire than stock then your shocks are extending to the max when you hit a bump in the road causing the death wobble. It took me a while to figure it out after the dealer couldnt figure it out. Try putting on some upgraded performance shocks this will solve your problem.

My 04 2500 did it for 6 months before the dealer finally figured it out.It started at 40,000 miles. They replaced ball joints, tie rods and finally shocks and steering damper and some other stuff. I still dont think it is fixed totally.

I was at a point that I didnt want the truck anymore because I couldnt drive it down the highway with out it happening.

This problem is sometimes seen on live front axle Jeeps if they are lifted...have larger than OE tires and some of the suspension parts are worn....the places to start are making sure there is no play in the steering linkage...tie rod ends...and then make sure the steering damper and front shocks are in good shape...I have used Bilstein high pressure gas monotubes on my 98 ZJ Grand Cherokee and they provide very good control of the front live axle...the OE steering damper can wear out at that mileage as can the shocks...mine has all the OE suspension joints still at 125000 miles but the shocks and steering damper were replaced at about 50K miles...never had DW....

Trackbar, Trackbar, Trackbar!!!!! It holds the front axle in line with the frame and you can't see the play in it from a shop hoist. You need to set the vehicle on the ground and have someone rock the steering wheel and look at the ends of the trackbar usually it's on the drivers side where they go bad.

That's consistent with something I saw last Monday. A Dodge pickup nosed up to the Jersey barrier on I495s at Rt3 in Lowell Mass. There was a rod attached somewhere under the engine dangling towards the left front wheel. I could see daylight through the attachment point as if a bolt had sheared.

There was just the driver and he apeared unhurt so I kept moving.

I have a 1996 2500 CTD and go and wear out one about month. They're easy to install and mine has a lifetime warranty form Napa.
