102k on my 05 Duramax, left front wheel bearing went at about 50k and the right front at about 65k, no other issues since then...still on the original pads as well...

Rear discs instead of drums help a lot too, the drums don't do much, leaving the fronts to take care of the majority of the braking...

I have trucks with both but I don't see any bonus to rear disc. In fact on my Sierra the rear drum brakes don't last as long as the rear disc on my Silverado. But with the drums I actually get an emergency brake that works.

When you have to make an emergency stop you will *feel* the difference.

How did you guys know your bearing was going out, especially in the front? I've got plenty of experience with trailer bearings and when they start to go, they are just go. On my '04 1500 I get a funny grinding noise on the left front but it's interment - makes me think the 4wd is engaging and disengaging - I originally thought it was a bearing as it sound just like a trailer wheel bearing going out when it makes the sound.

My last chevy was a '98 1500 and I put 235k miles on it, still getting 17 mpg and not a hint of smoke from the tailpipe....love my crew cab, but sure do miss that truck.

These bearings will last longer depending on conditions driven. If they recieve a good jar like a deep pothole or slide into a curb they often fail shortly thereafter. At least most of the domestics are bolt on hubs. I tried to do a 2wd Tundra last week, ended up pulling both spindles and sending to machine shop with bigger press. Needed 40 ton press to remove one of them. Your not doing that at home.
