Default How much play is too much in my trailer wheels....bearings?

Im getting ready to tow the boat approx 800 miles , and I want to make sure that the trailer isnt going to give me any problems (all the lights /tires have been replaced)

I jacked up the trailer, and shook the wheels back and forth, one wheel has virtually no play, the other has maybe a 64th of in inch of play. The last set of wheel bearings has maybe 1000 miles on them over a period of 5 years (the first 800 were 4 yrs ago).......

Thoughts?

Id tighten the loose wheel one notch on castle nut and lube change both hubs .should be good to go. best regards, actionc

Ideally, you want little or no play, but no preload.

I would take both wheels down and inspect the bearings, if they look good, clean and relube them and install new seals. Taking a chance on bad bearings can mess up a great vacation.

I went with the instructions put out by Tie Down in their owners manual for their hubs. They said to torque the castle nut to about 40 foot pounds and then back off 1/6 to 1/4 turn on the castle nut and bend the washer tab over. Seemed like a lot of torque, but I just got back from a 1300 mile round trip with no hub issues. I did carry two spares and all the tools to totally overhaul on the side of the road, but thank God, no issues.

Thanks, problem solved.

I pulled the Bearing Buddies off and it turned out the castle nut was loose by about 2 notches. After the adjustment , the wheel still has a good balance of free-spin and drag.The only thing I have to do now is to put in a new cotter pin, as I junked the old one pulling it out. The grease inside there also looked brand new.

You are supposed to use a new cotter pin anyway. They are about the least expensive parts you will ever buy for your boat.

Yeah, of course, I was planning on it.........I was just saying thats all I have left to do.

But you make a good point, it seems that all too often when it comes to replacing something cheap (yet crucial) alot of people just blow it off and pu the old one back in.....usually ends up with lots of regret!!!
