Need trailer advice I need some advice on repairing the bunk setup on the trailer for my Proline 211WA. Currently the trailer has two sets of bunks. The two inner bunks are spaced about 1-2 feet apart support the keel and span almost the entire length of the trailer. The two outer bunks are about 1 foot inside the outer frame rails and support about 7 feet of the outer hull from the transom forward. Each outer bunk is supported by three shotty adjustable height posts. At the top of each post is a angle bracket that bolts into the horizontal wood bunk. One was so deteriorated that it broke off and nearly punctured the hull. I'm afraid the others aren't far behind.
Can I scrap the outer horizontal bunks and replace them with vertical 2x8's with angle brackets u-bolted to the cross members? If need be, I'd run the 2x8's through the table saw to make sure they match the v-hull angle. My concern is that the surface area of a single 2x8 is less than the surface area of the current horizontal bunk.
Should I keep the two keel bunks or scrap them? I would guess they should be supporting most of the boat's weight. I've seen many trailers with only two large long outer bunks...but no keel bunks. That seems like a lot of stress on the hull...unless those are adjusted to ride under the stringers.
