Default Need Help, Towing Q's......

Hey all, I am new to the board. I have a 22.5 walkaround I tow with my 2004 Burban. The trailer has brakes that work When I connect thru my adapter. I just bought a 25ft Travel Trailer. My Q is do I have to buy a seperate braking system or will it work the same as my boat trailer? Thanks in Advance!, DW

I would think your boat trailer brakes are surge and have little or nothing to do with your vehicle eletrics except you may have a reverse solnoid hooked up on your trailer if you have disc brakes. Don't know much about RV's but typically you need a in cab brake controller like a one listed here http://www.brakecontroller.com/ I don't think your truck came with one from the factory but I am not familar with Chevy's.

I agree with Shamrock69. Typically, boat trailer brakes are surge while travel trailer brakes are electric. You will need a electric brake system installed.

You bought a 25' travel trailer and didn't ask if it had brakes? Now that sounds a lot like something I might do.

Fortunately, unless it's really old, it probably was required equipment. But that does not mean they still work.

I would suggest, just for your own piece of mind, that you stop by a travel trailer dealer and have him inspect all your safety equipment and tell you everything you may need including possibly a weight distributing hitch.

You will need to buy a brake controller that mounts in the cab and get a round 7(?) pin receptacle installed at the rear of your vehicle for your travel trailer (electric brakes). Electric brakes are awesome when they are working right. As someone suggested, take it to a trailer shop, have them check it all out and calibrate the trailer brakes. Take the whole rig to them and leave it there if you can. You may want to ask them go through how to set the brake controller with you as well.

Happy camping!
