How do you tie your strap to the hook? If you're tying your strap in a knot you're significantly reducing it's strength?

I would say that's correct, that a knot would reduce the strength. I just replace mine for $20.00.

I always use cable on a manual winch and I use enough to double the winch capacity with a snatch block if required. A steel cable with a load rating of more than the winch will never snap back becaue the cable will not be stretched and breaks can only be caused by a damaged/corroded cable. An overloaded cable that stretches before it breaks will snap back. Just replace the cable if you see broken strands or corrosion. Cable is cheap.
