Default Looking for a solution

Hope this post isn't redundant. But here goes. Just paid off my 03 Ford Explorer in January and 2 weeks later the tranny (no tranny jokes please) went and cost 2500 for a rebuild at 92k. I just sold it. Got 5k for it. Def below the BB value but the phone wasn't ringing off the hook. I used to get a car allowance at wk, but now they just lease. So I got a small Pontiac Vibe for commuting and long drives with the wife 2 kids and our fearless dog Talya.
So I'm in need of a rig that can tow my 21se Parker from my driveway to the ramp 3 miles away and the occasional road trip. Been looking at (8cyl) used Avalanches, Tahoes, F 150s and Silverados. I have about 10k-12k in cash (after i sell the wife's 2000 Subaru wagon). After looking at this thread, I see some people have gotten killer deals on new rigs in the low 20's. Did I miss the boat? Not seeing too many deals where I look. I live near Sandy Hook NJ.So
A) Does anyone have any leads or seen any worthwhile sales?
B) What are peoples thoughts on the used rigs?
Was hoping not to add another monthly bill, but with a big down payment, might not be so bad.

Appreciate feedback

If you have time stop by Lomedico Motors,up the road from Red Bank Volvo.
Alex might be able to help you find something at auction.
They are good people and won't waste your time.
