So I am looking at them right now. They would be similarly equiped; 4 door crew cab, leather interior, 2 wheel drive, split bench front seats. The Ford would have the 5.4 V8 (320HP, 390 lb-ft of torque) and the Chevy would have the 5.3 V8 (315HP, 338 lb-ft of torque). Some of the differences:
- Ford has more space in the back seat.
- Chevy has the gas saving feature for the engine that shuts down 4 cylinders
- Ford 2 wheel drive looks like crap
- Chevy is $3k cheaper
- Chevy looks better and will have much better tires and 20 inch rims
- Chevy has better storage in front of the truck
I will tow a 23 foot boat, roughly 4000 pounds. What should I go for and what gear ratio should I get with the truck.
I really do not like the Dodges and am nota fan on the Toyotas gas mileage.
Actually I think the GMCs look a lot better than both the Chevy and the Ford. Other than that it's basically personal pref. Both are proven good vehicles and I don't think either can claim some great edge over the other. $3 grand might also sway me.
depends on the kinda person you are, I myself picture the chevys as being a little more rugged, and the fords perhaps belong more in the city with chrome rims and loud music........
haven't checked out the new interiors of the gm's but personally I like the interiors of the F150 alot more. they'll both tow your boat no problem...just comes down to ascetic preference.
Get the Ford F150 DVD on the build of the Ford, I have 2004 F150 XLT 2WD pulls my 22ft robalo no problem. great Truck, & the new one`s are more fuel efficient, just my 2c`s
from what you are saying the ford would be the better tow vechicle due to the options:
the cylinder de-activation and the 20" wheels both reduce the tow rating..
but if you do not have to go far, and you will not exceed 5k lbs, the chevy or GMC is not bad
Ford, at least they are not blowing through our money and should be around for hte long haul. Hopefully GM/Chevy fall off the face of the earth.
(before you squak- my dad owns nothing but chevy's/GMC, my 2 brother in laws both work in the auto manufacturing industry, so I know what the loss of jobs would do)
Whatever you do don't buy a FORD! I have a 2008 F150. It has been in the shop 13 times since March 2008! Everything from the computer to bad wheels and tires, brakes, transmission, ac/heat fans and air doors. It has been 5 times on brakes alone. Ford is why the US automakers are failing. Oh yeah, and forget about towing or hauling the suspension system suffers under as little as 500-700 lbs. THE TRUCK IS A STINKING PIECE OF CRAP!!! DON'T BUY ONE YOU'LL BE SORRY!!!
My memory tells me that the early effort by GM to drop cylinders was a complete failure and nothing but trouble, so that feature now is something I would avoid, but others with experience on current models can set that straight. My son has the 20" rims on his truck and CRIES when it's time for tires. The discount might not mean as much as you think when you need tires.

Don't forget that Ford has the added feature of blowing some spark plugs and securing the rest so tight that they have to be broken to be removed. But take heed, Ford now has a special tool to assist in the boken plug removal. Seriously, go on the net and research "spark plug problems with Fords" - I did and then bought a Dodge.

Sorry, but you are a single data point. I can go online and find MANY posts from owners with serious issues with their Ford, Dodge, Chevy, Toyota, etc.. There isn't a truck maker out there without some sort of problem in their vehicle. The only difference is whether the issue leaves you stranded and more importantly does the manufacturer stand behind the product and fix it when there is a problem (and NONE of the manufacturers have a spotless record in this area.)

I thought that issue was with the older 6.0L Super Duty motors. Was this a gas motor issue (5.4 V8?) that affected 1/2 tons as well (or instead if I'm off on the 6.0)?
