Default 2003 Silverado 2500HD Duramax

A 2003 Silverado 2500HD regular cab with the Duramax has caught my eye locally. This would not be a daily driver for me, strictly a weekend errand truck and tow vehicle.

I don't have all the details on it but it has 88,000 miles; that seems pretty reasonable for a 6 year old truck.

Any real issues with these vehicles? I have owned several trucks but never a diesel.

Thanks!

Only issues are the fuel injectors. I have a 2003 also and GM has given a 200,000 mile warranty on the injectors. Mine is still running strong. Good luck.

Like nojob said the injectors on that model gave trouble but they did increase the warranty on them. Mine were replaced at about 65000 miles and no problem since love the truck and the power. The 2003 models do not have the emission stuff of the newer ones which is good espically to the performance people.

a good measure to tell if it has been properly maintained is to look at the fuel filter to see if it has been changed. It amazes me the number of people that buy diesels and don't even bother to look into the maint. aspect of owning one. Clean fuel is key to keeping a healthy fuel system, and changing the filter on a regular basis is key. overall those are reliable motors and should offer long service.

I own a 2003 GMC Duramax and the only problem I had was the injectors which were replaced at 60,000 or so with the warranty to go to 200,000, I think. Other than that, has been a wonderful truck for us, pulls the boat easily, pulls the 21.5' fifth-wheel and boat together quite easily. Haven't put any mods on it as they are not necessary for what I do. We get around 14 in town and 20+ when driving unloaded at around 65 or so. When we put the trailer and boat on it, mileage drops to around 11 mpg or so. Still much better than my 454 ever was.

I bought my 2002 new. Now has 194,000+ miles and 5600+ hrs of runtime. I tow quite a bit and my miles are about half highway and half city.

Here's a list of every thing I've had done to it in that time.

Replaced injectors at 77,000 mile (under warranty)
Replaced all 4 shocks at 85,0000 miles
Replaced water pump ay 117,000 miles---expensive
Front brake job at 150,000 miles (still haven't done the rear)
Rear U-joint was squeaking at 150,000 miles--replaced all 3
Replaced 1 rear axle seal at 150,000 miles
Replaced injectors again at 170,000 miles (still warranty)

Never had the front end aligned and I'm averaging 60,000-70,000 miles per set of tires.

Mine is a 2WD, Crew and I average right at 20 mpg hwy w/ cruise set on 78 mph. Usually average about 15-18 mpg in town.

This thing will pull stumps out of the ground and I'll buy another when I wear this one out. Planning to keep it for 10 years (it'll be 7 years old in about 20 days) which should put right around 300,000 miles. So far, I have no reason to believe it won't go that far easy.

One thing to check on... the warranty on the injectors was extended to 200,000 miles, but I think there is a 7 year limit on it too. Seems like they last 80k-130k miles and then you have to replace them again. My brother's 2002 GMC had about 130k when his first set of injectors went south. Ask at thedieselpage.com

Fuel injector were a problem up to and including the 2003 models. If one injector goes bad they replace the whole set per the factory. The replacement injectors are ok. Bosh had a problem with the injectors and redesigned them. I believe the warranty goes out to 10 years and 200k miles.
