I take it that the classic 07 GMC/Chevy 2500 are pre-federally mandated emissions? The new body style came out in 2007.5 if I'm not mistaken.
MakoMyDay has a 2007 Z-71 Dmax. I saw his truck today...it has the soot burner on the tailpipe and I know he's said here before that his has all the emissions crap on it but he still gets 20 mpg (same as my 02 Dmax) on the highway.
I have an 02' 24 valve 2500 4x4 Dodge with the 5 speed and heavy duty everything so it has the Dana 80 rear. It has averaged 19 mpg for about 100000 miles. It has towed everything Ive attached to it. It has been completely reliable. ( I probably shouldnt have said that!)

I just sold my 96 dodge 12 valve with 230,000 miles for a 07 5.9 cummins. Why?, I simply wore it out. Reason being that I towed more with that truck than most big rigs do. I just simply put that truck thru hell and back, and it just wanted more. I did do some upgrades to the engine, but not to much. I could pull 12,000 pounds at 70 on I-95 and put it to the floor and still have power to pass anyone I need to. All and all that was the best truck I have ever owned. My 07 5.9 has some big shoes to fill, but I have no doubt it will perform. Good luck
the phrase of not knowing it's there would account when towing for me with my 03 ford 6.0l dually up to 12k pound's daily(compressor). Meaning pulling away from light's leaving all the car's far behind, and stopping aggressively, on the hwy never having the tow item controlling the truck or bouncing around because of it. I would forget that it was there and that to me would mean not knowing its there. Problem's finally arose for my injector's at 69k miles, Ford's warranty of course covered them but they would only fix each bad one 1 at a time do to the fact they were $500 each( I was informed the prototype had $1500 injector's, originally designed by navistar, ford changed them for production).I traded it in for my 08 f350 6.4l diesel, just bought a 246 cc intrepid (whole thing way's about 7k), when I tow it I know it's there. When I purchased the 08 , I got 7-8 mpg's around town empty, now I have a 8" lift, 37" tires and 490hp rear wheels (dyno).14 mpg's around town empty, 11 towing the intreped.
Hey man, I have a 2008 F350 Crew Cab 4x4 Dually King Ranch. It has 6.4L Twin Turbo Powerstoke Diesel (had the Diesel Partical Filter) But I have a Spartan Tuner, Pushing 500+ HP & 1000+ ftlbs. tq i did get 9-11 mpg now it gets about 16.5-17.3 mixed driving. I love the truck, The interior is great, the ride is awesome, it towes great. I have the 4.10 gears. Now ford out weighs all the competion by about 1500-2000LBS. If you want to read more about these fords you can visit Powerstroke.org & TheDieselGarage.com
Let me know if I could be more help to you bud.. Thank, Tim
My 08 sat in the driveway for about a year and a half, 2 trips to canada total miles 10k miles, till I found www.thedeiselgarage.com, that's when I did all my mods and now I drive my toy.
Anyone towing with the new style GMC/Chevy 2500 gasoline version? They're claiming a 12+k tow rating. Gas mileage?
We have an '08 GMC 2500HD with the 6.0 gasser and 6-speed automatic. Not sure of the tow ratings but we do tow 17K on a gooseneck trailer without any problems. I realize the Duramax/Allison combo would have been rated to tow this much weight but for the 2000 miles a year we tow this machine, could not justify the $9K premium for the diesel.
Gas mileage not towing averages 14 - 14.5 mpg with a mix of city/hwy miles. Towing mileage has never been checked as machine is never hauled more than 50 miles one way. I could only guess at towing mileage but would not be surprised if it is in the 7 - 9 mpg range with this much weight or probably 2 - 4 mpg less than the diesel may get when towing. Our '06 GMC 2500HD with the 6.0 gasser averaged 11 - 12 mpg.

Not looking to start a war here on personal preferences. However, I've been kicking around the idea of getting slightly used diesel truck. My question are:
Is 2007 the year that the manufacturers went to "clean" diesels? Are the problems that I've been reading on spread across the Big 3 manufacturers?
I've been leaning towards a pre 2007 or early 2007 model. Should I not consider new?
Thanks
Get an 08/09 F-250, break it in, buy the Spartan Package and go have fun! It just won't be a clean diesel but trust me, you won't care!!
It's been a while but I ended up getting an 06 Dodge Ram 2500 5.9L 4x4 Laramie. Now I just need to learn what fuel additives I need to add and everything else that comes with a diesel. Thanks to all for your help and look forward to any other advice you can give.
Good Choice, nice rig. Program it, night and day diff.
01 F 250 PSD 7.3, 3.73 rear 4x4,130 K. Diablo Sport programed 110HP, K N Filter, 4" strait pipe. I always average 19MPG combined.
One bad front hub at 100K. Brakes and Power Steering pump at 115. Oil and filters religiously at every 5K.
Rock Solid. Best vehicle I have ever owned. Only not replacing as the OP stated the DPF ( clean exhaust) is an issue, and warranties are ridiculously low on the new trucks vs years ago.
11 F250 with the Scorpion Diesel in house by Ford, I'll await.
Sniff around the Diesel Garage dot com, loads of opinions. Sort of like a THT for Diesels.
and warranties are ridiculously low on the new trucks vs years ago.
Good point. I'm still under powertrain warranty until 70K mile and engine warranty to 100K miles. Not only is this my first diesel it is my first 4x4. I noticed, when I decided to test the 4x4, that it had a serious wobble when making sharp turn/u-turn. Is this normal for 4x4's? It is fine on straight aways and normal right and left turns. My fault for not testing this on the test drive.

If you are on hard ground or pavement it is probably normal. The front and rear tires are fighting each other. Test it on loose gravel. 4x4 is not supposed to be used on pavement unless its covered in snow or ice. Using it to pull up a boat ramp won't hurt it though.
Phisherman,
Congrats on the purchase. Great choice. Unless you need the extra power for towing I would recommend leaving the truck stock. The cummins has plenty of power like it is and most failures on the engine occur on trucks that are tweaked. I use Lucas injector treatment in mine on a regular basis to lube the lift pump. The ULSD does not have the lube required. There's also a great thread here with a list of additives and their lubricating properties. I forget the author. Some of the aftermarket air filters that claim to increase power and economy let in too much dirt with that extra air flow. "dieselram.com" has a lot of good info on all of that. As said before, the front end is the weak part of the truck. When mine wears I will replace original parts with Moog parts. That should take care of it.

08 F450 4x4 crew cab dually with 5 speed auto, 4.30 gears, and every option but the KR package. This truck is a BEAST, I tow a 11K lb boat and a 15K lb 40' 5th wheel and can keep up with traffic from a stoplight or run at any speed I choose on the highway. It's actually more truck than I need but after wringing my 2001 F250 gas V10's neck for a couple years towing the boat, it's nice to know that my truck isn't working too hard. My father has a 2005 Dodge 3500 dually with the 6 speed manual and a 90 HP chip, not even in the same zip code regarding power but his gets much better mileage.
With 4.30 gears and an automatic, my mileage isn't anything to write home about. I get 13.5 empty in mixed driving and with either the boat or 5th wheel, between 7.5 and 9.5 mpg depending on whether I'm running 55 mph or 75 mph. I can't say I don't know 15K lbs is back there but it darn sure doesn't feel like that much weight, the truck rarely downshifts from OD.
20K miles so far, at least half of it towing, and only had t have the dual climate control flapper doors replaced under warranty because the temp controls developed a mind of their own.
Ford dealer did a recall done on a plastic radiator T fitting and a program flash at 15K miles during an oil change.
I looked at Ford, Chevy, and Dodge before buying this F450. The Chevy had a softer ride but only 6" of ground clearance to the frame, rediculous for a 4x4. Dodge has a great motor/trans combo but the suspension components are exactly the same size as their SUVs. To me, the Ford Superduty series is the most rugged big truck made right now, everything on them is bigger/beefier/heavier than the other 2 brands.
